He definitely has sulked a little bit, but he's still demonstrating all his usual behaviours now again. he spent a lot of the first night trying to chew and scratch his way through the plastic blockers. However when I got up in the morning I found out he had made a nest in his new box.
He seems pretty fine in himself, I haven't noticed a lot of difference with his behaviours!
Yes I'm happy that I would not have to have taken him to the vet! He's already got a long coat that he cleans quite a lot daily!

Good to hear he's settling down & adjusting to the change well so quickly.

He's definitely gotten used to sleeping in his box now, but he also keep scraping at the blockers daily too as if trying to get back to the old tube nest. I don't know if this is bad, as he attempts to bite it too.

He'll probably give up on the blockers after a while, give him as much distraction in the cage as you can, scatter feeding, whimzee dog chews & things like that can really help.
Don't pay him any attention when he does chew or have a go at the blockers as that could encourage him to do it more.

Ok, so my hamster is still chewing on the blockers and now he's started to chew quite frequently on the bars. I think his cage is too small for him now. I feel awful about it.
I'm ordering a new cage on Thursday, but until then, we're trying to take him out as much as we can, handle him, let him in his ball, but he's super unsettled in his cage, when putting him back in, he runs up to the bars and gets out again, if the door is closed, he'll chew and chew on the bars.
We've started putting a blanket over the cage and found this way, he doesn't chew on the bars. So I wonder if it's because he's used to seeing me and knows he's going to be let out?
Either way, to me, it's worrying behaviour. I clean out his cage regularly, change the water, given him lots of bedding to burrow in, put a tunnel underneath, but he's just trying to get out....

It could be just the fact that the cage is small & it does also sound like attention seeking behaviour, it's not unusual for them to do that & it's best to ignore it as much as possible & only pay attention when they stop but with the small cage you have now I would just keep doing what you're doing until you can upgrade, most likely with a larger cage & plenty to do he'll get out of the habit.
Don't clean his cage too much, that really stresses them out, just spot clean & not much else for quite a while.
When you get the new cage you don't want to have cleaned the old one for a while so you can use the substrate & transfer it with his scent to the new cage.

First off, wow. Thank you for responding at nearly 6am!
Secondly, I see. It definitely feels like attention seeking, but I wonder if he's just so desperate to get out of his cage. We handle him for 15 minutes or so, and put him in his ball for a good 15 minutes too, and then maybe an hour or two later, another 15 minutes, but this doesn't seem to be enough? Once the black keys goes over, he does calm down, and starts pottering about the cage.
Also, I don't clean out big chunks. I pick up poop and throw it away. I do this every day when I change his water. I know about the old substrate and I'm getting it all smelly, specifically for the new cage.

I'm a bit of an early bird
I'm sure he'll appreciate the smelly substrate when you change the cage, sorry I misunderstood what you meant by cleaning.
He obviously enjoys out of cage time! Once he's in the new cage it may take him a while to settle down but with more space & more to do then he may stop the attention seeking behaviour as long as he still has a good out of cage session each day.
Just see how it goes when he's moved over.

Ok hey! Sorry I haven't updated this for a while! But my boi loves his new cage and sometimes doesn't even wanna come out!
There's something else I wanted to address - bedding.
So I put in half of his old bedding when swapping him into the new cage, but I've wanted to upgrade to something other than woodchip for a while, so I have the Carefresh stuff that everyone recommends now.
I wanted to completely fill the base of his cage with this, but it means obviously getting getting rid of the woodchip entirely. Is this safe? I know you're supposed to leave some of the old stuff in there, but it gets everywhere and gets stuck to his long fur, so I wanted to do away with it.
I'm not going to touch his house or rearrange the cage in any way, just replace the substrate. Will this be ok? He won't feel too stressed out if I leave him for a while to get used to it will be?

It will be stressful if you change all the substrate at once, if you're using shredded plain white toilet tissue for your hams nest you could try putting plenty of that in the cage & leaving that for a while so it gets his scent on it & then spread that over or mix it with the top layer of substrate when you change it, if you don't change anything else of clean anything else for a while too that will help.
