Default Electronic rodent deterrents

He値l guys

My housemate saw a mouse in our kitchen his morning. We are thinking of buying one of those plug in electronic deterrents that are suppose to ward them off with a high frequency noise.

My hamster lives in my bedroom upstairs quite far from the kitchen but I知 worried if we get one of the plug in things it will bother him. Does anyone know how far the noise of those deterrents reach?

Thank you

No please don't use one of those - they are very bad for hamsters - even if someone next door had one it could affect your hamster.

I would just get some mousetraps. Not sure which country you're in but we've used these Rentokil ones which work very well and are reasonably humane as they sedate the mice within seconds and they die under sedation. Which means you usually find them either still in the trap or very nearby (so they don't die under floorboards and stink). The poison/sedation is sealed in a unit so can't be spilled. Even so you must keep your hamster well away from them.

You can get humane mouse traps like the one below but to be honest it's not a good way of getting rid of mice. It can take a long time to catch all of them (and there is always more than one!) and you need to take them a good mile from the house or they just come back again. Also I don't think it's that humane as sometimes they die of fright if they're not found in it soon enough. Mice can also get quite savvy about these and keep the trap open while they get the bait or just ignore it.

Traditional mouse traps are grim but also work well with a bit of chocolate as bait. Whichever one you use, put it near a skirting board in the area you saw the mouse - 2 or 3 of them.

The electronic things often don't work anyway and would harm your hamster.

What kind of cage is your hamster in? Mice can get through bars bigger than 7mm. Just thinking you need to keep an eye so they don't go in your hamster's cage as they can spread diseases to hamsters - hence the only real solution is to catch them/kill them off. Sad but they are wild mice and carry diseases and they breed very quickly.

On the mouse catching front....

Do you know what kind of mouse it is?

You may have wood mouse. I had 2 instances over the past year of "rogue" wood mouse getting into my house (over winter). They look different to the "house mouse".

I used a rentokil humane trap with peanut butter. Caught it first time and released in a park 3 miles away. Very easy, very quick..and very cute I may add!

A 2nd one got in months later and I did the same. haven't seen any return since.

Another option worth considering over the kill option first, If you have many mice, I would consult your landlord and see where they are getting in etc

Thank you for your replies. I didn’t actually see the mouse but from what I’ve read I think it was a rogue mouse just visiting instead of a colony somewhere. It was durin the day and there’s no evidence anywhere of droppings or gnawing. I have lived in this house for a good two years and I’ve never seen one. I’ll look into non-kill traps.

I’m in the UK. And he lives in a plastic bin cage with 5mm mesh on the lid.

Also from my experience you might end up being able to hear the awful high pitched sound. Last summer I went on holiday with my family to scotland and the cottage we stayed in had one of those in the living room. I could not sit in the living room because of that insanely annoying high pitched beeping.

That is a good point by Amethyst Ice - rather than my "kill them" approach! Which probably came from trying to battle a mouse problem for a long time. Wood mice or field mice are quite sweet looking little things and quite small. A house mice has more of a pointy face look and normal mouse size. I did do the humane traps at first but after a week of getting up at 6am and driving a mile I was worn out and just set traps and there were dozens of them drawn out by the bait.

Catch the first one and see what happens Your hamster's cage should be fine if it's a bin cage with 5mm mesh. I would put any hamster food in a sealed box though. And also bedding if possible.

Do you live in a rural area at all? Or an older place with floorboards? I had them once before in a modern house - I had a large back of black sunflower seeds and an old mattress in the garage and it had attracted them in - they had a field day with the sunflower seeds and the mattress! Unfortunately they then got into the house roof space via pipes with lagging round that went up through the garage roof.

If there is a nest then it is quite important to remove all the mice somehow as they can chew through cables.

I live in the middle of a city, but it is quite an old mid-terrace house. We had a bit of a poke around today behind the kitchen cabinets in the cupboard under the stairs and couldn't find anything. I think it was just passing through. I'm not entirely convinced my housemate wasn't imagining things to be honest!!

Mice do have that effect! You think you imagined it. I would just put a humane trap down where it was seen and see if you catch anything. If you do have mice you'd probably hear them at night scratching in the roof. I've tried various baits but a small piece of chocolate worked every time.
