Default Bella has only just started bar chewing

I have had my syrian hamster bella since 13 april and for her whole life with me she has lived in the hamster heaven. This is a large and spacious cage above minimum size. Only today, I caught her participating in some bar chewing. I have never seen her do this before and I have never had any reasons to suspect she was doing it either! I was just wondering if any of you think you know why she is doing it?
Thanks,
CBB

I have had Maestro for exactly the same length of time and he is also in a HH cage to help with taming as I like the big front door. When he is older I have a barney cage which is bigger. Maestro may have been bar chewing in the night 3 weeks ago because he had a bare patch on his nose just before the Andover show - typical! I checked his cage and found the wheel was perhaps slowed up by his fitch removals. So I dug it out. Now I check the wheel is turning easily at every evening feeding time. The patch has gone so I hope that was the problem. It is a typical problem. Otherwise, has she plenty to do in the cage? I do not use any of the supplied shelves/ladders but rather design my own interior.

On Maestro's thread in the Syrian section, his set up is on page 5 and you can see his bare patch on his nose on page 9.

I am wondering if it's the hot weather as our Robo was bar chewing the other night (if you can call it bar chewing as he's so small!) and he's never done it before. You could try putting a cool ceramic mug on its side on the floor of the cage (as in stick it in the fridge for a bit first) and see if she goes to sit in it to cool off. If nothing else it'll distract her. I guess it must be stressful for them if they feel a bit hot and they want to get out or something.

She has plenty of toys in her cage, definitely not an issue there. Serendpity gave me an answer which i believe to relate most closely to Bella but thank you very much for your help

Thank you Serendipity, I believe you are right there!
It is beginning to get very hot around here (saying that, i am actually suffering from bad sunstroke at the moment). She has tried to remove all the bedding from her nest and has vacated into the mug which i keep in the fridge over night and then place back into her cage in the morning as she only sleeps in it and has no interest in it otherwise.

My ham has started bar chewing as well, he also lives in the hamster heaven and has beev very happy in it up until now. It's so upsetting seeing and hearing him frantically gnawing at the bars of the cage in the middle of the night! I normally love hearing him run in and wheel and just rustle around but now its just that horrible rattling metal noise, which keeps me awake and is just upsetting. Anyway, I love the cool mug idea, genius! I've also filled a plastic tub with ice cubes and put it in his cage with the lid on so he can sit on top of it or next to it to cool down. He normally lives in my bedroom but tonight I've had to move him to another room due to the noise and I feel terrible about it! It has comforted me a little to see on here than some other hams have also been bar biting during the hot weather and not just mine. Poor little things!

Yes, it is nice to know that Bella is not alone! She is certainly not a fan of the hot weather.
