Default Gnawing at a hole and now chewing bars

I'm worried about my new hamster. We got her last Sunday (5 days ago) and she's timid as a new baby hamster would be but she seemed to be settling in. She's in a detolf. We'd been stroking and briefly handling her to tame her. On Wednesday, we put her in her ball for the first time and she explored everywhere, even jumped back in her ball after putting back in her tank - she seems to love her ball.
Yesterday, we found that she'd found the little hole in the detolf wood (small, circular hole where a tiny light would go if we used it as a cabinet). She been gnawing around the hole. We put a plastic blocker in but she gnawed it out. We then had to put one of the glass shelves in to block off the end and barricaded it so she couldn't get through. Now she's chewing on the bars in an attempt to get there. Unfortunately, she'd also made her bed by it but we no other way of ceiling the hole.

Has anyone else had this problem? She seems fixated on that hole.
We're thinking of cutting up an ice cream lid and glueing it over the hole? I don't want to deprive her of her home or stress her but I know that gnawing at metal is bad for her teeth.
How long does it take for them to damage their teeth on metal?

This issue seems rather stunning to hear about her doing that, the Detolf is a rather large cage, hmm have you tried blocking it with a piece of wood? I don't know if this is safe but someone said about spraying lemon in area being chewed.

Lemon definitely isn't a good idea!
It's not unusual for them to get fixated on a small hole like this once they find it, I don't have a detolf so I don't know how big the hole is but if you can get a nut & bolt in the hole then that usually works. If not blocking with a piece of wood or a bendy bridge might do the trick.
