Normal robo behaviour?
Hi guys,
As some of you may know I've been using the box trick and the tissue trick as methods of bonding with Miller and Calvin, and I have been noticing improvements, that are major to me - like them running or even resting there paws upon my hand and taking treats from me. Although they are still a bit skitish at first, they get more comfortable more quickly, and their curiosity towards me is growing i feel.
They both seem to be bonding with me at a similar pace. There's been a few times when Miller doesn't want to come out and I just play with Calvin, which I thought was a bit strange at first because Miller always used to be the more outgoing one.
Anyways, the last couple of days, Calvin has been running up to my hand, chewing it and running off again?? What do you guys make of this??
Neither of my little dwarfs have ever bitten me before, and I'm not even sure is this biting??
When it happens it certainly doesn't hurt, and I've never moved or done anything about it because I'm not sure what it means?
If anyone has any ideas, I'll appreciate it and be interested in hearing what you guys have to say,
thanks x

Re: Normal robo behaviour?
It's not uncommon for dwarfs to taste or nibble lightly at things especially hands. We have had quite a few do that and I feel it is just investigating the thing to find out what it is.

Re: Normal robo behaviour?
Hi there!
I think that(if the chewing doesn't hurt), then this is simply playful behaviour. Maybe try making sure that your hands don't smell of food, even your soap may smell of edible substances which would encourage the hamster to chew/nibble/maybe even bite so I suggest using non scented soap. Also, if the hamsters are fairly new, you won't be able to always correctly predict their personality. So what I'm trying to say is that, even though Miller used to be the outgoing one, he could maybe have a slightly different personality than what you thought. This is of course a possibility but it could be a valid one. Anyways, I hope your taming goes well and this helps!

Okay, so it's nothing to be concerned about? I was a bit worried it could've been aggression or acting out of fear. I'll keep taking baby steps then

My Syrian used to do this sometimes. I think it was to test if it was edible. Luckily he usually decided I was not.

Re: Normal robo behaviour?
I would be a bit cautious about handling them separately. I assume you mean when your hand is in their cage, but pairs and groups are notorious for getting territorial and falling out and needing to be separated. I have read that even if a cage is set up well to avoid territorial behaviour, that taking one out separately from the other can lead to one getting territorial over the cage very quickly.
So I'd say if it's for out of cage time it is better to take both out together - tricky if one hides! But if it's your hand in the cage with treats on then they are not actually leaving the cage.
It could be that the one hiding away is the less confident of the pair, if the other one is becoming more dominant, so it's something to keep an eye on.
You're doing better than me as our robo runs and hides

Most of the time they are out together but if one doesn't want to come out, I'll just take one out. I'll make sure I don't do this anymore then!
Thanks for the advice everyone!
