My hamster trying to escape his bin cage ALL OF A SUDDEN
Hi guys I have one question. My ham has big bin cage plenty of tunnels, 4 houses to hide, two ceramic mugs and some rocks because is hot here. His water is fresh he has full bowl of food, big safe wheel and also sand bath. He seemed to be very happy ham, but today he attempted to escape his cage very passionately. He cannot escape because his cage is too tall but still. He did this just when we first brought him here, I have him for three months now and he seemed happy. So I don't understand and I'm really anxious. He just runs his wheel and then he goes to the cage walls trying to escape.. It's frustrating. I thought maybe it's because it's really hot so he would like to escape somewhere cooler? But he is in darkest corner of the room..Please help

Re: My hamster trying to escape his bin cage ALL OF A SUDDEN
I think it's a natural instinct, not to escape as such but to see what's out there that they might be missing out on
Does he have out of cage time? In a playpen or an enclosed hamster safe area? It could also be that he's feeling too hot, I don't know where in Europe you are but the temperature has been warmer than usual. Do you have areas in the cage where he can cool down, such as a mug, ceramic flower pot, granite tile?

Re: My hamster trying to escape his bin cage ALL OF A SUDDEN
I think its definitely time for some out of cage play! bathrubs are great for initial socialization, as theres no way they can escape and theres no need to spend money on a playpen! however, i always recommend purchasing a playpen for every hamster because a bathtub environment isnt totally ideal in the long run. Theyd probably want to explore different places a little more. (i know mine does) I know a hamster ball is tempting because its so much cheaper than a playpen , but due to the mixed feelings about their safety id avoid them altogether. there are tons of diy playpen videos that you can make for cheap in case out-of-cage play isnt what your hammy was looking for after all! that way theres no money wasted
heres a great vid on a diy playpen that is super cheap!

make sure that the toys in his playpen are new from the ones in his cage! I used popsicle sticks to make a big house to explore and a disposable baking tin and cardboard to make a maze! playpens and fun toys dont have to be expensive
