Default Light sleeper?

Hi, I'm a first time hamster owner and 2 weeks ago, I became the proud owner of a beautiful female Syrian hamster who is around 8 weeks old. She is very confident and seems to have settled in well. She is not tame yet but will happily take treats from my hand.

I have a Hamster Heaven and she has made her nest in the penthouse. She lives in my living room, and it is a one person (adult only) household and fairly quiet aside from tv noise. It seems like she is a really light sleeper, and if I stand up, talk or walk past her cage she wakes up to come to the bars of the penthouse. Sometimes her eyes aren't open and she sniffs through the bars and returns to her nest pretty quickly if it is me ( she stays out to sniff if it's strangers). The same thing happens when I return home and the door is unlocked, it's almost like she's greeting me, but I am concerned that perhaps it's not just that she's pleased to see me, and she is in fact stressed.

Any advise on whether this is normal would be very much appreciated

Default Re: Light sleeper?

Unfortunately it really isn't good for them to sleep in the penthouse, the best thing to do with the hamster heaven is to remove the penthouse & tubes blocking the holes with the stoppers that come with the cage.
Apart from being disturbed easily it will get very unhealthy for her sleeping in there.
If you provide a nice large house with no base on a deep layer of substrate (fill the base part of the cage) & give her a nice pile of shredded plain white toilet tissue to make a nest too she should settle down again quickly enough.
If you don't have a large house you can use a cardboard box, shoe boxes are good, just use it upside down & cut a hole for a door.
