Question New hamster acting strangely today?

I’ve had mocha for a week now and she seemed like she was settling in but was still a bit skittish.

However tonight I heard weird noises and went to check on her, and as soon as I stepped foot near her cage she shot across the cage faster than I’ve ever seen her, climbed up the bars to the top (she’s never climbed since i’ve had her) fell down, shot up the other side, fell down, then sprinted into her wheel and ran as though she was terrified. When I crouched down next to the cage to try and see she flinched at any noise and seems terrified of something, I can’t see anything in her cage and I’ve no idea what she’s so terrified of but I need to fix it!

I’m worried she’s hurt herself or something but she won’t stay still to even let me look at her, and there’s no chance at all she’ll let me pick her up

i’m sitting quietly watching her and she’s being less fast and twitchy but she’s making a lot of noises, little chirps and vocalisations and chittery noises and she’s burrowed into this new nest she’s made under her water bowl (she stopped using it as a water bowl after she figured out the bottle)

It sounds as though something probably frightened her, sometimes it's hard to tell what, it could have been a noise or something in her cage, any other animals around?
Just try to keep an eye on her to make sure she's not showing any signs of injury & continues to eat, drink etc normally.

Hamsters can make all sorts of squeaks, shouting and even screaming like noises when they are afraid. I always find its best to settle new hamsters in by sticking to a strict routine of when you interact, offer treats (obviously not too many) as a means of winning them over and just staying still when offering them.

She sounds like she's panicking which could be to do with people walking past, noisy environments, different smells, or even just she manages to startle herself which I've had many hamsters do to themselves. As she gets more comfortable and realised she's safe with you she should calm. It sounds like what she's doing is normal for a new and jittery hamster as far as illnesses or injuries are concerned just keep an eye out for discharge around her eyes and ears and the symptoms of 'wet tail' as these can arise when they are stressed. Also keep an eye out for obviously any limps or cuts and just check she's eating and drinking but I'm sure it'll all be good. She's probably just nervous and needs quiet and a slow introduction to you. I find sometimes just sitting very still next to the cage or tank helps them get used to you. I also like to brush past furniture a little so they know I'm the rather than risk sneaking and scaring the little one.

Hope this helps in some way or another.
