Default Herman and his new toy /monster

So Herman has a hamster ball. I got it for him, cleaned it out, put two shavings of his own used bedding and even some cashew crumbs in there, placed the ball inside of Herman's hut and he HATES it. His actions remind me of a young puppy dog that is unsure / scared of a strange object.

Herman looks at the ball, backs away, inches forward and backs away all in one motion, squeeks at it, inches forward and bites the ball hard (enough to ensure to me that he greatly trusts my hand in his home because he's yet to do that to me).

So is there a way I can get Herman use to the ball without him injuring himself (I am afraid he will chip a tooth on it from aggressive biting the ball) or do I just let the dogs play with the ball and never mind it being Herman's toy?

Also, I clean and clean and clean Herman's saucer wheel and he still dirtied it up within minutes by placing shavings of bedding on the saucer in a perfect circle and then peeing on each shaving. If there is no getting him to stop then I wont be frustrated over a dirty hamster saucer. (Btw the wheel is a 12 inch and Herman is a syrian)

Lastly, I feel like some days Herman doesnt want to be bothered and other days Herman enjoys a nice rub on his back from me. Do Hamsters get their moody days as well?

If he doesn't like the ball then that's fine as you really don't need it, balls don't offer any benefit to hams, either buy or make a playpen for him so he can have out of cage time with toys to explore & you can also interact with him in a playpen.
Peeing on the wheel is quite normal for some hams, the more you clean the more they do it, just give it a wipe down with a damp paper towel or if it's really bad wash it with plain water about once a week.
It's not unusual for them to want to interact more on some days than others, just let him guide you & spend more time with him when he's in the mood for it.

Alright thank you. Yeah I was going to use the ball to transport Herman from the Herman Hut to the tub but... he just views it as a giant monster. He likes my dog better than the ball lol.

Alright so the wheel thing though messy is normal.

And he gets his moods like humans do.

Update: he will sit on my hand and clean himself.
He wont do that with the kids yet but he loves a good stroke on the back from the index finger from my kids. He will stretch with his eyes closed while we "massage" him.
