Post Teeth chattering at night

I don't know if Herman (male Syrian hamster) is just eating his food at night or if he is teeth chattering. I can hear it while I try to sleep.

On the subject, if a hamster is quietly teeth chattering while you pet it or look at it, is it angry or is it happy?

Saw some controversy in my research so I wanted to hear from people who walked with hamsters.

Teeth chattering can mean a variety of things, when your handling your ham it could mean contentment or it could mean fear so you have to take it in context & look at the overall behaviour.
They can be quite noisy munching on their food so that may be what you hear at night, if he is chattering his teeth it may possibly be that something to do with his cage is bothering him & not quite right.

Well he doesn't have a wheel yet. And could definitely use one or two more hide spots and toys. (I ordered a wheel and waiting for it to come in).

Also, I have to wonder if I know the difference between eating sounds and teeth chattering. Probably eating since you said they are noisy eaters and I was hearing it from across the room.

Thank you for the help.
