Wheel chewing!!??
Hi all
My hamster used to chew on her cage (it's a hamster heaven). I thought it may be that she had too many toys and since I removed some she hasn't done it. However last night I noticed her really going at the inside of the wheel!
Is this normal? I don't know how to deter her as I want her to go into the wheel just not chew it!? It's not even a new wheel as I got it for her when I realised the one supplied with the cage is too small after a few days.

Re: Wheel chewing!!??
Wheel chewing isn't as common as bar chewing but it can become a habit with some hams & once it does it can be a hard habit to break.
What chews does she have?
If you haven't tried them already I would get her a whimzee (the toothbrush ones are the most popular.
Have a look at the thread on bar chewing for general ideas to distract her from the habit.

Re: Wheel chewing!!??
She has a couple of fruit tasting wooden toys, a wooden cup cake and a couple of wood sticks. I've tried giving her a dog biscuit but she uses it as food and not a chew toy.
I just don't want her to ruin her teeth.

Re: Wheel chewing!!??
Most hamsters don't really like wooden chew toys tbh, if they do chew wood they tend to prefer natural wood like hazel or apple sticks which you can buy, dandelion root is good in small amounts too.
Eating the dog biscuit if fine as she'll be giving her teeth a good work out while she does it just not too many.
Whimzees really are the best though.

Re: Wheel chewing!!??
My hamster used chew on bars so much! But I bought him the dentastick (for dogs) and I always cut a tiny bit for him and loves it. It's hard enough for them I think. Maybe try different types of chewy foods ?

Re: Wheel chewing!!??
Some hamsters can be picky with their chewables. For example, my female Syrian won't chew on anything unless it's fixed into place. She likes the wooden carrots that you attach to cage bars, and sticks but only if I fix them to the corners (she won't even bother if they're just loose on the floor). I do provide her with whimzee toothbrushes (XS) which I recommend, and also I give her a small piece of hard food every night to keep her occupied (e.g carrot, a peanut she has to crack open, or a Russel Rabbit cruncher). Sometimes it's a bit of trial and error to find what your hamster likes to chew on!

Another vote here for Whimzee chews. My hamster enjoys them and ignores any other chews.
