Default Nesting in tubes

Hi all, I'm a first-time hamster owner and new to this forum.

I got a 10 week old Syrian hamster a week ago (she's called Peggy). I got a wooden bed for her, which she appeared to like, but has been pulling all her bedding and food into the tunnel tubes which go around the back of her cage. The tubes have ventilation holes in them, but there's still a bit of condensation building up in there. I would prefer if she would sleep in the bed - she's also weeing and pooing in the tubes, which is a pain to clean.

Should I remove the tubes until she settles into the bed or should I just leave her to it? I tried removing the tubes yesterday, but she seemed quite stressed and was biting the plastic stopper to the tubes, so I put them back (didn't want her to be too upset). But since then she's put even more bedding in the tubes, and I don't really want to encourage this...

What should I do? Thanks in advance for reading!

Hi & welcome to the forum & congrats on getting Peggy

This is a really common problem & it's definitely best to remove the tubes, she will get a bit upset at first but if you leave her to it for a while she'll soon settle down & nest somewhere more appropriate.
Make sure her house is on a nice deep layer of substrate so she can burrow down under it & give her lots of shredded plain white toilet tissue to build a nice nest with.

Thank you! I thought that would be the best thing, but wanted another opinion first hopefully she won't be too stressed out

Agree with Cypher xxx Scatter some food around her cage and hide a couple of treats in the substrate - it'll distract her from being upset about the tubes.

She should settle into a dark space for her nest. You could use the tubes for playtime outside the cage.

Thank you everyone for the advice! I removed them, and gave her a lot of distractions (even though she is still wanting to get through the tube that's now blocked off. I've put new bedding around her cage for her to (hopefully) take to her wooden nest. I think she'll be okay!

I'm sure Peggy will be fine
My hammy had tubes for his cage when he was younger too and I had to get rid of them since he grew too big to use them safely. After a few days he forgot that he'd even had them in the first place and was content with foraging for food in his bedding and digging in his new sand bath.
