Question New to us hamster

Hi! We are going to pick up our first hamster today. Someone bought one and is getting rid of it, so we agreed to bring it home. I have done quite a bit of research but do not know anything first-hand about hamsters. Its a white winter and the current owner says that he is very tame and loves to be held. My question is do we have to re-tame it? I read somewhere that when you bring your hamster home you should just leave it alone for a few days so it can adjust before you start taming him. If this hamster is already tame, then what should I do? I have a 7 year old and a 10 year old that really want to hold it and play with it, but I don't want to make it scared or anything. Please advise.

hey there.
when a hamster goes to a new home it is best if you leave the little guy/girl alone for a day or two just to kind of get a feel for its surroundings.
as for the taming, you will most likely need to tame it again, because you are new to it you will have to let it know you mean it no harm. for the first couple months you hamster will likely get scared and be abit jumpy around you. what i find best is to wait until it wakes up [ they are nocturnal, meaning they wake up on a night time].

please can you tell me what you would like to know :]

Congrats on your first ham, it's great that you're giving this little one a new home

It will be quite an adjustment for him to make but if he's already tame it's best not to leave him too much, once used to handling it's best to continue, don't rush him or anything, let him lead you for the first day or two, if he seems curious & inquisitive & ready to interact then go right ahead, if on the other hand he seems a little nervous in his new surroundings then just talk to him reassuringly until he's settled in a bit.
If you're children aren't used to handling hamsters it might be best if they just watch & talk to him at first just while he settles in as they can be scared by any sudden movements or noises so maybe let them get a little used to each other first.
