Default Male Syrian, extremely scared/shy

I was wondering if I could get some help for my hamster. I just got him yesterday from a pet shop (I don't have breeders in my area) and they told me he was 3-6 months old. I've tried my best to learn about syrians to take better care of him, so I haven't pet him yet and I'm letting him get used to his new environment. I've been noticing that he is very easily scared and extremely shy. I was wondering if this is a normal behavior for a hamster in a new environment or if the low quality life at the pet shop has made him more fearful. I would love to hear some tips/feedback on how I can get him to start trusting me more.

(Also I was wondering if it's normal for him to sometimes sleep behind his wheel)

Thank you !

It sounds like he is behaving pretty normally for a new hamster. It will take some time for him to tame but with patience you will be able to do it. Have a look through the boards and use the info to help you plan a route forward with the taming

Yes sounds normal to me. Hamsters aren't naturally tame, it takes time to win their trust. My dwarf hamster sleeps behind his wheel all the time and another dwarf I had made his nest inside his! I think it makes them feel safe. Does yours have a little house to sleep in as well? I use cardboard boxes which used to have cat food pouches in as houses for mine and cut a hole in the front, they seem to like the size and its nice and dark. My Syrian loves his box and doesn't sleep anywhere random now he has it. If your Syrian is a bit older than a baby it will take longer to tame him but if you take it slow and let him come to you you'll get there in the end x
