So my female Syrian Hamster I have had almost 5 months. So assuming she was 2 months old when I got her that makes not quite 7 months old.
She was cage biting (bars and tubes) like crazing even though total floor space was over 1000 sq in (6451 sq cm). which includes her main cage, its 3 upper levels and a storage bin cage connected by tubes.
I know you guys only count open floor space so i decided to get 1 storage bin and it has 833 sq in (5374 sq cm) of open floor space thinking yes less total space but more wide open space. (i dont know metric system to well, the conversions are what the internet told me minus any digits to the right of a decimal point)
i know thats a downgrade but I literally can't do bigger. storage bins dont come bigger. and cut 1 side of two storage bins and connecting them isnt an option. and Ikea Detolfs are way out of my price range. So is making a cage from scratch. I don't even own all the tools needed for that I think.
So my current problem. She still wants out with a vegeance. all the time. when i lift her out she starts chewing on my shirt. also now i can hear her chattering (or whatever the word is) her teeth. she has never done either of those. lately i lost my job so ive been staying up all night so i can interact with her more. She now hates her ball because I made the mistake of letting her roam freestyle a few times. and either way she heads straight for the bedroom door. which she cant get out of but that doesn't stop her from constantly trying. I can't connect the old storage bin to the new one because the top I threw away.
Oh and I don't have room for a 2nd storage bin as big as the first.
She doesn't show any other signs of cage rage. She never even so much as nips me and occasionally she will sit still and let me hold and pet her (altho she was probably in heat those times).
Oh if it matters the cage swap was less than a week ago. also i used to have a dwarf hamster in a different cage but I gave away (roughly the same time period) because my Syrian is demanding all my attention so I couldn't handle two hamsters. they never interacted and if they saw each other is was when one was out of its cage while the other was still in theirs.
lets see, she has tons of toys and I occasionally swap out a couple in hopes she wont get bored with them. Plus a few different kinds of treats that I offer 1 or 2 daily include live meal worms (only one feed by hand or in a dish). Oh and she even has a sandbox to dig in and she loves it. just had a thought maybe there are too many toys in. I'll try that but still need help.
I have a red LED light bulb I use after dark instead of normal light. my research shows hamsters cant see red light so i figured. hey, I get light and she gets her needed darkness. altho i do turn on a regular light when she is oit of her cage.

So yeah, I need help. I'm still a hamster newbie. sorry for the novel.

I just remembered about some answers to a previous post I posted. About her just needing time to adjust to the new cage and also scent marking like that being normal. Hopefully thats all that is. Ugh I got issues. My anxiety gets me going in the wrong direction and it doesn't help that I see my hamster as kinda like daughter or friend or something and not just an animal.

You could try her with two wheels in her cage. This way she may be kept busy using one then going to the other one and using that. She can go backward and forward between both.

I had a high maintenance one like this. There were no easy answers but it does help to keep things predictable. Get her into a routine where you give her the same amount of play time each night at the same time. Then she will know what to expect. Don't respond to her bar chewing or tantrums, just keep things the same and she should settle a bit. I got bits of old carpet which I rolled up and plastic tubes and made my room into a huge playpen for her so she had plenty of tunnels but she still went mad like yours trying to go under the door. They can smell the air coming under it. I used to put a tuff-tube (just a couple of pounds from Amazon) along the bottom of the door and she would then chew the tube quite happily for ages instead of trying to burrow under the door.

If you're in the UK you can get hold of large second hand cages on eBay or gumtree if you want to upgrade at any time but don't make too many changes or she will be even more unsettled

I have had several bar chewers....it seem to be worse when they wasnt on a time play schedule. Meaning some night the got play time for an hour then other nights 3 or 4. I finally got Sisco on a schedule and more free range play. He has stopped with the chewing. Could also be linked to Teddy just having babies. Maybe they just wanted each other.

Good luck and i am sure you will get it all figured out.
