Unhappy Cage biting!

My Syrian is a constant cage biter every night he goes to his second story and bites for minutes at a time one specific area he has a good size cage toys treats a good size wheel that works perfectly and everything I’m not sure what it is when I first got him the first few months were fine but I’m afraid it will get worse I’ve tried putting olive oil on it so he would stop but the weirdo just licked it off like he liked it!ive also tried blowing lightly in his face and he stopped but as soon as I get back in bed he starts again!please help he used to use his wheel all night and was happy now he still uses his wheel a little but now he really just bites......some advice as soon as possible would be great

Thanks😬

Default Re: Cage biting!

I just posted in your other thread about your cage, if it is the one I think you mean it's too small really & you probably can't really get enough enrichment, toys etc in the cage.
What size wheel does your ham have? A syrian will normally need a 10-12" wheel, if the wheel is too small & your ham can't run comfortably then that is one thing that can lead to boredom & bar chewing.
A lot of chew toys sold for hams aren't really vey popular with them but whimzee/antos dog chews usually go down well, the toothbrush one is best, & that may help.
Generally as much enrichment as you can offer, scatter feed, make treat toys from cardboard tubes to put food & treats in so he can forage & chew the tubes to get his food or treats.
I wouldn't recommend putting anything on the bars to prevent chewing or blowing on your ham, if he chews in a particular spot you can try putting cardboard over the bars in that place, don't reward chewing by paying attention when he does it, it's usually best to ignore them when they're chewing.
Make sure he has adequate out of cage time in a secure play area with lots of toys to keep him busy too.

There's some great advice about managing bar chewers in this thread: Managing Bar Chewers
