Unhappy Hamster Wants to Escape

Hello everyone! I recently, about two weeks ago, rescused a very tame one month old Syrian hamster named Alfie. He lives in a 40 gallon breeder tank with lots of toys and a wheel. He also has lots of bedding to burrow under. I’ve noticed that he spends all of his time awake trying to escape. He hangs from the mesh at the top after he uses the water bottle to get up there. He jumps off his hut and then falls. Whenever I put my hand in his cage, he rushes over and climbs up my arm and on my back to try to get out. I play with him in his playpen for over an hour every day. Any advice?

Can you extend out of cage time?

Adding more things to do in his cage can help distract him. Scatter feeding, hiding food in boxes or folded cardboard tubes, things to climb on under or through, deep substrate for digging/tunnelling can be good ways of keeping him entertained.

A platform is often liked, but could give access to the top bars.

Another wheel, so he uses one, then goes to the other one to use that. He may then keep going from one wheel to the other to have a run.

Has he got lots of different items to chew?

You may be able to tie tubes to the top wire to make a sky walk/ roof run. A Sputnik may also be able to be hung from the top, with something added to made climbing in and out safe.

Can you rearrange the tank so he can't reach the mesh? It sounds like quite normal behaviour to me & doesn't necessarily mean he wants to get out sometimes they just do things like that because they can, if he has out of cage time, has plenty of toys & a good size wheel I wouldn't worry too much other than trying to make sure he's safe from falls.
