Default Storing, not eating

Hi all, I know storing food in a special place is normal for hamsters, however mine seems to store every single piece? There is always a massive pile of food so part of me thinks he’s not eating any of it?
Help?

Some hamsters seem to store more than others and I've yet to find a way to break the habit entirely! One of my previous Chinese used to stash literally everything from her food bowl as soon as I put it out for her... I tend to top up their food bowls every 2-3 days which encourages them to eat from their stash but also to eat the parts of the mix that they're less keen on.

The amount hams stash does vary a lot, I've had some make huge hoards others hardly anything at all.
Do you weigh your ham at all? If he's not eating he'd be losing weight, as long as his weight is stable or he's gaining weight if he's a young ham then I wouldn't worry about it.
What about treats? If you tend to give treats then you might need to cut back to encourage eating the mix.

Don't worry it all sounds normal. They like hoarding it but then snack from their hoards. I think they like to pouch and hoard a lot so they can put it in a safe place so no-one can steal it. And then eat while comfy in bed Veg usually gets eaten on the spot in my experience.

It would be a good idea to check their weight just to be sure. I have a young hamster who decided that he would start hoarding all his food and was only eating his vegetables. I thought he looked smaller and the scales confirmed that he had lost weight. Most likely it will be as others have said and he is eating food from his stash but regular weighing every couple of weeks can help to stay on top of any potential eating/health problems

Hi and welcome to HC! As others have said this is perfectly natural behavior and shouldn't be of concern unless he is losing weight. I would definitely invest in a scale to weigh you ham regularly so you can be aware of any changes. I would just fill his bowl every couple of day and when you do his cage cleaning you can begin to estimate if you need to increase or decrease the number of days in between filling his bowl and the amount that you are feeding him depending on the amount of stash you find hidden. I would also be sure to remove any uneaten fresh foods so it won't rot. Hammies tend to eat them on the spot and not take them to their nest so most likely this won't be a problem. Since Eros is tame, I usually try to feed her fresh veggies and treats outside of her cage so I can be sure she is completely finished. I find it to be a good bonding time for us, too.
