Default Re: New Syrian hamster

Please can someone help me I'm absolutely devastated. My Syrian hamster (Ted) just doesn't want to interact with us. He's still staying in he's house and won't come out. He seemed to perk up on Thursday and came out to explore he's new cage. Since then we haven't seen him. Last night and this evening I've sat by the cage talking to him and he hasn't wanted to know. I cut some fresh cucumber and some peas and other Goodie's and took the cage off so I could put some food by he's house to try and get him out that way. He just put he's head out with he's eyes closed and vigorously snatched the cucumber and took it back in he's house and didn't come back out. I've done the tissue scent trick a few times and he's took it in he's house. He just does not want to know at all. Please help me

He may be a bit unsettled in the new cage.Howlong has he been in the new cage. Hopefully he will get more confident in time. You can do the tissue trick each time you give new tissue for his nest.

I got him 7 days ago and the pet shop owner sold us a cage. I didn't realise until we got home that the cage was way to small. I haven't had hamsters since I was a child so I didn't know any better. The cage was like 30cm x 30cm and you could tell he was not happy (u wouldn't be in that cage) so on Thursday 2 days ago I got him another cage once I had some money. He seemed to be really happy and he was out playing in the wheel for the first time and running in he's tunnels. Since Thursday night he's not come out. Before I went to bed last night I checked on him and he was half way out of the bed but he was in a frozen position. I didn't talk or make a noise because I didn't want to startle him and the house was quiet because everyone was asleep. He just stood there for about a min and shot back in. He didn't even eat he's food last night

It’s good he has a new bigger cage. It is likely he is still settling in. 7 days isn’t long. One of my new hamsters has been hiding away a lot recently, after being quite active when I first got him.

I had to check he hadn’t escaped, as I hadn’t seen him for days. He is fine. He had burrowed under the substrate.

The weather can effect them to.

To check that he is active. You could put food in certain places and see if it’s gone in the morning. At least you would know he is coming out, even if it’s when you aren’t there.
