Light sensitivity?
I got my syrian hamster a couple of weeks ago and have started to tame him, he’s doing very well and he’s a really sweet little guy but the thing is i can’t have any lights on
If I leave the lights off for a period of time he will come out of his nest, but when I turn on the lights to start taming him he will go back to sleep in a couple of minutes, and i was wondering if there was a way I could maybe prevent this from happening?
thank you for your help!

Re: Light sensitivity?
Have you tried just having a lamp on so it's not too bright?
They can be a bit shy in the light when they are new & nervous but generally get used to it soon enough.
If you can get him out into a safe play area, something like a playpen or large plastic storage box with some toys for him then you can interact & have a taming session without him being able to run off to hide, keep sessions short to begin with & if he's really nervous just keep the lights low until he gets more confident.
If you can't really handle him yet offer a tube (hand over one end!) or large mug or something he will climb into so you can safely transport him.

Re: Light sensitivity?
i installed a dimmer light when i got my first hamster so when taming I can lower the light level to try not to startle the ham.

Re: Light sensitivity?
Lights down low or a couple of lamps seem a good way to go - but avoid it creating shadows when you're hand moves if you can as I find that makes them a bit skittish. If you can find a way for them to come out when you have a light on that would be better but apparently they can't see red light so I all else fails, red LEDs are a good way to observe or interact with the main lights off.
