Destroys EVERYTHING
So my lovely angel Pickles every night destroys every toy I put into her cage!
She has so much substrate but every night she pushes it together into one LARGE pile! She has tunnels galore and she moves them to her wheel blocking her wheel so she can't use it! Her potty she again moves ( how I don't as its a large ceramic dish) and covers in substrate. Chews hanging from the ceiling are destroyed an pulled down. Every morning I wake up and it looks like I haven't cleaned her in months. She has playtime every night when she is awake! but everytime again she comes out to play she just wants to go back in an start her self destruct cage mode. It is funny to watch as she goes crazy like an interior designer moving things, pushing things, throwing things!
Any idea why??!! or is this normal she has a big Zoo Zone 2 cage and has everything a hamster could ever want!

Re: Destroys EVERYTHING
Sounds normal to me She is clearly happy doing her housework and having parties Could you "fence off" the wheel? ie use a medium bendy bridge or two on their sides to fence off an area round the wheel with lower substrate in the wheel area, so the deeper area doesn't block the wheel.

Re: Destroys EVERYTHING
That’s a great idea I will try that and see if she approves! If not she’ll move it anyway! I did go out today and buy her a whole load of new toys the more destructive types and already she is going for it!

It sounds like she is just having fun and enjoying her self, Ghost is a digger when he gets the bug, then he is unstoppable

Re: Destroys EVERYTHING
Luna does this! I give her toys like toilet rolls and tissue boxes for some cheap and easy destruction, as well as whimzees to get her teeth into regularly. She, loves piling up substrate and tunneling and digging (and did that "blocking the wheel" trick to escape once!). I let her have a big pile at one end of the cage where she sleeps and graduate down to very little substrate by her wheel. This usually stops her from blocking it up (I keep an eye on it) but I have quite a long cage (detolf), so a bendy bridge might be a better solution depending on how it fits in your cage

Re: Destroys EVERYTHING
It seems her new layout has been a success she is currently on her treadmill as I call her wheel! She hasn’t moved any substrate and has made herself a nest outside her house not in it! I think that’s a message to me to say ‘I can do what I want!’ But all looks good! Who knows by tomorrow I might find destruction!

Re: Destroys EVERYTHING
How big is her house? They like to build a big nest in winter to keep warm. If the house isn't that big, would there be room to put a shoebox house in instead? I gave our Syrian a bigger house and put a bendy bridge tunnel over the door so it was dark inside and he moved his nest inside it You cut the base out of a shoe box and a door in one side and have that on top of the substrate. Keep the lid to use as a lift-off roof. So you can check inside occasionally rather than lift the house out, so her nest stays in tact. If you put a bendy bridge over the door she'll probably move in (the tunnel entrance tempts them

Re: Destroys EVERYTHING
She has a rat camper van house as she is very large Syrian! I have tried a shoe box before but she just chewed it into pieces within a hour! She has decided now her camper van is the place to be so has moved back in!

Re: Destroys EVERYTHING
Campervan house sounds interesting Do you have photos? Ferplast sin houses are quite good. They're wood and fit together like a jigsaw and have a lift-off roof. The guinea pig sized one is not a bad size for a hamster (far too small for a guinea pig). It had the rabbit sized one (again too small for a rabbit) for our Syrian and it worked well, but it does take up a fair bit of space in a cage - on the other hand it makes another level. It makes a good nesting box and room for a litter tray inside it.

It's quite tall so I had it sat on the cage base with a couple of inches of substrate inside it so it was kind of set below the substrate, which makes the door less big.
Here it is in Newt's cage -he stuffed the door up with bedding
