Bar Biting
So, I let my hamster out her cage when she's especially hyper to let her blow off some steam. But I can only have out until nine because beyond that point everyone in my household is getting ready for bed. So, I put her back into her cage but she starts to bite the bars obviously to get back out.
If I ignore her will she stop?
I don't know how to prevent her from doing this.

Re: Bar Biting
I'd just ignore her. In this case, it's likely she's doing this for attention. How long afterwards does she exhibit this bar biting behavior?

Re: Bar Biting
It does sound like attention seeking, it's best to totally ignore it so she doesn't get a reward for the behaviour, maybe try giving her something like a treat toy made out of toilet roll tube or kitchen roll tube when you put her back in so she has something to occupy her at that time & just make sure she has plenty of enrichment to keep her busy.

What a little devil!
If you know for sure it's just attention seeking and not something she's unhappy with like cage size of set up, your best bet like said above is to ignore it. A lot of people put lemon juice on the bars but in my experience with a bar chewer, it didn't work and I ended up moving her to a tank.

Re: Bar Biting
I'm sure it's from attention seeking but she done it for the majority of the night but it was always at the door where I take her out. I literally got her a new cage last week that she is currently in and she lost interest in the toilet tube puzzle treat but I have her a monkey but which worked until she was finished with it. I feeling her bar biting is still from attention seeking but what do you guys think?

Re: Bar Biting
If she's doing all night then it's not really attention seeking, it probably started out that way but it sounds as though it's fast becoming a habit that you need to break if you can.
You could try putting wooden pegs around the door after you put her back or maybe hanging a treat stick in front of the door, if she's only been in the cage for a week she may still be adjusting & settling in, if she keeps it up though maybe have a think about any changes you could make to the cage to give her more to do.
There are other ideas here that might help.

Is lemon juice safe to put on the bars? I thought anything citrus was dangerous for hamsters?
It does sound like attention seeking to me too. Does she live in your bedroom? I think sometimes if they can still sense you are in the same room then they carry on trying to get your attention but if you leave the room they stop.

Re: Bar Biting
I thought citrus was bad for hamsters too.
My Kashi used to bar chew when she first moved to mine from the pet shop but once she had her 100 x 50cm barney cage with lots and lots of fitch bedding to dig in and loads of cardboard toys/boxes with food hidden inside she gradually stopped.

Re: Bar Biting
I don't think it would be a very good idea.It would be potentially irritating(not necessarily toxic),so it would be best to avoid pure citrus products as much as possible(citric acid in very small amounts as a preservative is generally okay though for treats etc,but it isn't strictly citrus derived and is found naturally in many commonly fed vegetables and fruits).

Re: Bar Biting
Lemon juice is often suggested in various places online but should never be used.
