Hi everyone I have a syrain he's really sweet and will take treats from my hand and will run up to the front of the cage when he hears my voice. But he will wiggle and try and get away from me if I pick him up. I pick him up almost every night while he's awake but hasn't gotten any better. please help!

How long have you had your little guy? It sounds to me like he's a bit nervous to be held. With nervous hamsters, it's important that you don't rush taming, and work on being persistent with handling. Keep moving at his pace

Re: Hamster won't let me hold him!!
I'd try confidence exercises then. Spend as much time with your hands in the cage as you can. This will get him used to you poking around, and each him that hands are no threat. I'd also try leaving your hand flat in the cage, and allow him to crawl on it. Reward him for sitting in your hands. I tend to do this exercise right before feeding time so it's also associated with getting dinner. The more comfortable your ham becomes with your hands, without feeling restrained, the less nervous he should be. Good luck, if you have any other questions, please ask

What I mean is, put your hand in and when he sits on it comfortably, a treat will help him to tolerate it more. After that session, just feed him dinner as usual

Re: Hamster won't let me hold him!!
I don't refer to my hammys as having separate meals like humans do lol
I feed them at night just before they get up and then the next night I see what they ate and if they need more food I'll give them more food. The little green alfalfa pellets are really annoying as most hamsters won't eat them. So I pick those out or just let my hammy's eat everything except the green pellets and just toss them. This is Higgins Sunburst I'm referring to.
There are some hamsters that you just can't pick up for various reasons like nervousness or skittishness or biting. If you rushed the taming in the beginning since you've had him for 7 mo, maybe that is what's making him nervous. I'd try what Drago suggested. Hope he will be able to become fully tame but if not you can still have him in a play pen or exercise ball. It's good to give him out of cage time as well. Hope this helps.. I know there are different opinions on the exercise ball.

Re: Hamster won't let me hold him!!
Have you tried getting him to climb into a mug or something and then allowing him to climb out of that onto your hand/lap? I've found that some hamsters don't like being picked up from their cages but can be happier about being handled once they're out of the cage.
