Handling a new hammy - how long do you find it takes?

My dwarf has never fully tamed, he hates being handled and I don't like stressing him out so I handle him only for his health check ups and to put him in his playpen.
My Syrian on the other hand.. She was instantly tamed, I did nothing. The very first day I brought her home she was on my shoulder.
