Question Taming a 4 week old hamster

I just bought my third syrian hamster after losing my last she is 4 weeks old and her name is Winny. For the first three days I left her to get used to her surroundings, after that I began taming, however she seems very stressed and by now my other hamsters would've taken food from my hand she hasn't even tried to, additionally she has a large cage but runs on her wheel really fast all night, is this a stress habit and should I remove her wheel? Any advice is appreciated just want to make sure I have a tame happy hammy

Welcome to to the forum. Congratulations on getting Winny. I'm sure she's filling a void after losing your last ham. The first thing I'd like to say is: all hams are different. I know that's an obvious thing to say but it's important to remember. What your other hams did or didn't do at different stages doesn't really matter. If she is 4 weeks old then she is very young. She will be settling in, having probably only recently just left mum & little mates. It's a big change to adjust to. I wouldn't remove her wheel as a form of exercise but I know some of the breeders here don't give wheels before a certain age so I'm sure they can comment on that better. I think that if you let your ham's personality guide you then you can find the best way to tame her - there isn't really a one size fits all approach. Things like the tissues trick where you put some loo roll up your sleeve or down your top for a while & then put it in the cage can help with them settling & becoming familiar with your scent. Plenty of coverage on the cage is good too. Lots of hidey holes & things like bendy bridges to hide under are good so they don't feel too exposed. Don't worry about what you think she "should" be doing just take your time & see a little improvement every day & enjoy having her. I'm sure you'll get there.

Hi I didn't know you could get hammies that young, she must be really small and cute, the youngest hamsters I usually see in pet shops are usually at least 6 - 8 weeks.
My hamster Bambi is often on his wheel all night from about 9pm - 5am though he does occasionally take mini breaks. Hamsters can travel for miles at night in the wild. I wouldn't recommend removing her wheel, does she have other things that she can do in her cage that she can play with like chews, tubes, a sand bath?

hey thank you for the advice it nice to know i have somewhere to go and talk to people, this taming process can be very frustrating,we have had an improvement this evening she has started taking treats of me through the bar of the cage, i guess your right every hammy is different and its just going to take time, i will keep her wheel in. She also has plenty of places to hide in her Cage bendy bridges and houses. I have never considered a sand bath, can i leave it in her cage all the time?

Sand can be left in the cage at all times but you have to be really careful on what sand you buy as some can be harmful to hamsters.
This is the one I use -
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Supreme-Pet.../dp/B0036768OG

Keep away from reptile sand.

4 weeks is very young age for a hamster so it is entirely normal that this is happening. take the taming really slowly and maybe don't start by interacting straight away. I like to just speak and walk past my hamster's cage every now and again to try and get them used to you. i've never tried this myself as I am terrible at singing but I've heard its worked in the past, try doing lots of singing around the cage too. IF all else fails just wait until the hamster is a bit older (at least 6 weeks) to start the taming process
