Default Taming Issues

My hamster Mabel is such a bundle of joy and very active. Whenever I talk to her she runs up to the side of her cage and is very attentive. She is very food orientated and will quite happily take out my fingers and even off my hand.

The furthest we have got with taming is her climbing onto my hand to grab food but she will immediately retreat back off the hand. We haven't quite reached the sitting of the hand yet.

It has been very slow, is there anything im doing wrong?

I have tried picking her up by scooping from underneath with both hands but she immediately jumps back out again. I think trying to hold her has been a step to far.

Should i just continue until she gets comfortable with sitting in my hands?

I would let her climb into an exercise ball then hold the ball just above the bedding & let her walk onto your hands as she climbs back home.

If she's uncomfortable with this then I'd try to be patient & continue with the treats, you can put them up higher on your hand, like a trail of seeds. She if she might want to explore you, patience is key, try to go only as far as your hammy is comfortable

You could try holding a bigger/long treat with one hand over your other hand. In an attempt to get it/chew it she should climb and stay on your hand.

Just out of curiosity, how long have you had Mabel?

Have you tried a taming box?. An empty box that she can't climb out of (possibly have her wheel in the box). Put your hands in without food. She may climb on them as a way of trying to get out of the box.

Guys, the trail of seeds worked! She climbed right onto my hand, I was quite surprised because I have tried this before without success but I buried my hand a little in her bedding/substrate.

Not only that, she quite happily sat in my hand while I lifted her slightly off the ground

Im so pleased!
