Leaping hamster
She literally leaps from my hands. And in her play bin she's leaping up the walks.. like a gerbil. But she's not. She's a Syrian.
She's super bold. Friendly. Asks to come out then leaps.
She's young, I got her from PAH she'd only been there two days so I guess she's about 7 weeks maybe?
Any advice?

Re: Leaping hamster
P@h told me they get baby hams in aged 8-10 weeks, so she will have been that old when you got her. This is normal behaviour for a new young hamster before they have been tamed. She will stop doing this once she is fully used to being handled. While she is still leaping, make sure that you never lift her more than a few cm from the floor of the play bin. And, you may want to use a cup or other suitable container to transport her from her cage to the play bin.
As for leaping in the play bin, this is probably because she is young and active. Make sure she can’t leap/fall too far to prevent injuries.

PAH also told me my dwarf was a girl but he's a boy and my Syrian was a boy but she's a girl. I don't take what they say literally.
As long as it's normal that's all I wanted to know. But when I say leaping up the walls of the play bin I mean scrambling to get out and leaping not leaping off things.
She's actually really tame already apart from the leaping.

Re: Leaping hamster
April has said it all Although she seems quite tame, the leaping from hands does suggest she is not fully tame yet. It's called "pinging". When she feels more secure and trusting with you, that should stop. You certainly sound like you have a maverick female Syrian there! It's time and patience. She needs to be settled in her cage (which she is trying to chew out of! So she is clearly very active and wants to get out!) And also it can be a slow process of regular taming sessions until she is more relaxed and doesn't jump out of your hands. It took 2 months with our last Syrian - bathtub taming twice a week.

Re: Leaping hamster
She's a right character! She's walking on my hands in the cage but she's still leaping out side of it. I put the cage on the bed though so when she leaps it's only an inch and she's got a soft landing.
I didn't have to tame my dwarf and it's been years since I had a Syrian, how often should I work with her.
The tank should be here by Wednesday or Thursday next week if I buy it on Saturday. I think when she's settled in the new tank she'll be a lot calmer. Only thing though, she hates the play bin and the bath, I'm wondering if she'll hate the glass sides of the tank? But there's nothing I can do about it anyway sadly, she has to go in it for her own safety.

Re: Leaping hamster
What makes you think she hates the play bin & bath? Is it trying to escape all the time? If it is that's entirely natural behaviour so I wouldn't worry just keep trying, short regular sessions, most people do it each evening at around the same time.

Re: Leaping hamster
When I have to tame a new hamster, I do twice a day 10-15 min sessions. Once in the early morning and once in the evening. Little and often works best I find.
I’m sure once she is settled in her cage she will like it just fine. The jumping at the wall behaviours are her trying to escape her play box. Usually, hamsters feel more secure in their own home, especially if you provide deep substrate and places to hide. So, I expect she will be ok. And, as you say, it’s for the best
Plus, as cypher says, the jumping does not necessarily mean she hates the box! Looking for an escape route is natural behaviour and just shows she is energetic, curious and eager to explore further.

Re: Leaping hamster
Ok thanks for that! I feel better now. I'll use the play bin every evening and her get used to my hands.
