Unhappy Advice on taming new dwarf!!! Please help!

Ok so a couple days ago I bought a dwarf hamster. The pet shop told me he is about 2-3 months old. I have had him in his tank ever since, and he seems to be doing well - sleeping during the day, eating, drinking, and using his wheel. But, he is sufficiently nervous. I am able to put my hand in the cage (in a very non-threatening way). BUT he tries to avoid it, and if he does sniff it he gets away quickly. I am only able to pet him gently when he is running on his wheel, or when he is still in one spot for a second. But every time I do that, he seems very nervous. I realize that I need to tame him, and that it may be tough because he is older than usual. I am planning on getting treats and putting them on my hand in the cage, so that he might take it from me. I also want to do the bathtub method, in which i get a blanket and sit in the bathtub with him. But I cannot pick him up! and I am afraid if I do, he will hate me even more! Someone please help me!!!
