Default I caught Daenerys trying to escape!

I happened to walk into the animal room last right just as Daenerys was trying to escape!

As far as I could tell she had either climbed on top of her hideaway box and reached the bars on the lid then shimmied her way to the edge of the lid,
Or! She had climbed up the back of the wheel to reach the the lid and was trying to move the lid and get out!

When I came in and she saw me she just froze like 'I wasn't doing anything!'
And sneak off back to bed!

I've never had a hamster who tries to escape before, Igor can't reach anywhere near the top of his cage, bless him he's too small, and Jeliza just wasn't bothered in escaping!

I did get my boyfriend to look at the lid and make sure she can't escape!

What sort of lid is it?
Thank goodness you walked in when you did, is there many places she could hide in the room?
Don't you have guinea pigs in the same room?

I have to confess I left the play cage door open last night . It's in the middle of the cage top so Cotton must have climbed up twelve inches and then climbed acros the wire ceiling 6 inches before I noticed him under the dining table. I didn't think the little dumpling had it in him. He was most disappointed when I caught him. He's never tried to escape before, but we didn't have Daisy then.

Glad we're not the only ones with escape-e hamsters!
Shes been at it again tonight guys!

The lid we have is a wooden/chicken wire lid, My boyfriend and I made it together.

I heard some odd thumping noise coming from the animal room tonight so i went to have a luck and she was hanging from the lid again, i sat to watch and shes using the wheel as a ladder to hang onto the lid and try to push it open with her nose,
Not too sure what to do, My partner is going to have another go at changing the lid tomorrow morning, for now we have stuck some heavy wood on top of the lid at that end so she cant lift it.
Shes also trying to chew her way through the wood at the end of the cage,
Its a detolf so its got wood at both ends.

Any idea what i can do to deter this behavior?
When i first got her i used a carrot chew treat to distract her from bar chewing in her temp cage, but thats not ideal to stop her multiple times,
I dont really like the idea of her attempting to escape during the day and night whilst im not aware.
I know she cant get out right now but still :/
Does it mean shes bored or unhappy in her cage?
Turns out she does use her wheel a little bit now, i saw her run for a few seconds today.

Im also worried about her teeth with chewing at the wood and also she is hanging from the lid by her mouth sometimes :/ :/

Have you tried whimzees? P@H sell them, mine either get the toothbrush or crocodile. I also got a lollipop stick mobile toy from P@H which Harvey has been tackling.
Have you got a couple of heavy books or wood to put on top of the lid so it's harder to push. Maybe put in a couple of hidey toys. I've also got an edible bridge and play cube which amuses Harvey. That's also from the same place.

I haven't tried them I'm going to P&H tomorrow with my mum, so I'll look then.

For now we've stuck some heavy wooden thing for our GP on top so she can't move it.

She has a lot of hideaway toys, she also had the same cube I think!

I have a notorious escapee named Duncan. He has managed to chew through plexiglass to escape his little prison. Make sure your lid is 100% secure- you'd be surprised how small of a space they can fit through! Make sure there's no areas that could be chewed through. I'd try adding some more play things as mentioned above, this way she has toys to keep her entertained. Scatter feeding has always helped with my ham, keeps them occupied, makes them use their minds, and is natural for them. Whimzees as mentioned above, are good options too. What I would do about the lid is perhaps swap out an area that she chews often with plexiglass so that she cannot chew at it. Alternatively, you could attach cardboard there as well. As for holding the lid down, I use a 25 lb weight! No way he's pushing that up

When dealing these hams, it's about management and trial and error. You could always address her cage. Perhaps it's too small for how active she is, or perhaps she needs more bedding. Hamsters tend to chew and try to escape if not all their needs are being met- this is in hopes of finding a better area. Pay attention to what she is telling you, and you just might be able to solve this no problem Good luck

I'm going to pick up some more hide away and toys after work today, I work in a market that has a pet stall so that's really handy! Get some stuff and the money is going to a mom and pap kind of busines!

She is in a Detolf ikea hack cage, so I'm not sure if she would have too little space?
She does have a lot of bedding too :/ hmm she burrows in it a lot! Which is nice! I would say around 6-10 inches of bedding in a lot of areas!!
I tried to move some stuff around to even out some bedding and when she woke up she got very scared,
Like, she flew backwards across the cage when she saw it.
It was very unsettling to see, so I felt bad about that :/

She also has a lot of wooden bendy bridges and stuff like that she can chew,
But ill see what I can kind at the pet shop to help

Could you have a totally wire lid or lids? One or two rectangles to make up the length and width of the Detolf. Leave extra wire at the edge and fold/bend in so it goes over the top edge of the Detolf. If this design was inverted/upside down bull dog clips may be able to clip it to the top of the Detolf.

I will post a picture of Willow's diy wire tank cover later.

I think I know what you mean and it sounds very similar to the lid we have made
It's got ply wood down the length and width and across both ends with chicken wire covering the space across,
But id love to see a photo!
