Default How to train a dwarf

I've searched many places on how to train hamsters (YouTube, other forums, hamster related websites) and I get the idea of gaining its trust over time, mixing you scent with its scent/letting it get used to your scent by rubbing your hands in the substrate or placing tissue with your scent on it in the cage. I've seen various methods from leading the hamster into a toilet roll and picking the roll up to having it in a hamster proof room and let it crawl around. I've seen ErinsAnimals, VanillaHamHam (and a bunch of other youtubers I can't remember) and they've given me some great advice.

however there's still a few grey areas that's not really been covered. I know hamsters are nocturnal/crepuscular so it's quite hard for me to catch him awake and tame him when he's when he's active. I've attempted to hand feed him various foods (keeping my hand still) and at most he'd sniff it a bit and retreat. I've had him for about a little over a month and I'm letting him adjust to his cage. I've had some issues because I don't know what food/treats he's interested in and my family tends to be very loud and I don't have a quiet room to take him in. They like to interfere a lot and tease me about what I'm doing cus they think it's ok to just pick him up and handle him straight away when he doesn't even trust me.

Main questions are:
What treats are good for hybrid dwarfs?
What timing should I train him at?
Is it ok to wake him up from sleep?
how do I get him used to having my hand inside the cage?

It is going to be difficult if you don't have a place where you can feel confident with him & he can feel safe to be out, hamsters do generally adjust to noise but if it is too noisy then he may just stick to coming out when everyone's gone to bed, you can try getting him up a little earlier than his normal time & once he's got confident with that gradually make the time earlier until it suits both of you.
You may have to wake him up to begin with, do it gently, rustle the substrate or his food bag or something similar so he doesn't get woken to suddenly, even if he doesn't want to come out to begin with make it worth his while waking up! Either make this the time you put food out or leave a few treats scattered near where he's sleeping.

Most hybrids go mad for mealworms so those are always good as a taming treat, same goes for sunflower seeds (preferably in the shell) they like small seeds like millet but he will probably have that in his mix if you're feeding a dwarf specific mix.
You need to only give these in moderation though as they are high in fat, a few extra when you begin taming is fine though.
You can try a few other seeds too like hemp or flax (linseed) as those are usually popular with hybrids, don't use any commercial treats or anything high in sugar.
A small piece of fresh veg makes a good treat too.

He will only get used to your hand in the cage with time, you have to persevere with keeping your hand flat & letting him come to you for treats.

My dwarf likes flax seed, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seed, linseed and her favourite is millet. The millet is usually sold for pet birds, but it's ok for hamsters.

Most vegetables are ok. My hamster like cucumber, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower.
