Default Flying Saucers for Russians?

Two of my Hybrids, Francisco and Marcello won't use their regular wheels anymore and will only use flying saucers. I'm not sure how good this is for them as a permanent wheel though (their backs don't seem curved at least). Does anyone know how I could get them to use their regular wheels again?

Sorry I haven't been online recently, uni's been hell Also I swear I'm constantly making threads about Franny's behaviour

If they don't want to use it, there really isn't anything you can do to fix that to be honest. You can try to remove the saucers for several days and see if they use their standard wheels more, but if not, I'd put the saucers back in as exercise is crucial. It's especially important for diabetes prone species like Russians. Good luck

I tried that and they just ignored their wheels still. I vaguely remember seeing somewhere that it's Syrians (too big) and Robos (too light so they spin off?) that can't use flying saucers? Hopefully they'll be okay

The reason I don't recommend saucers is because they don't mimic the natural running style of a hamster unlike an upright wheel. I've never come across issues with either Syrians or robos unless of course the husbandry is poor in general (many times the owners simply take videos rather than help the poor animals as they go flying off!). I wouldn't worry yourself over it, especially if you tried. You could also perhaps leave some treats on the wheel to at least get them to sit in it, which in turn may encourage them to run.

Rocket hasn't liked any of the upright wheels I've tried him with. I've spent a small fortune already on trying different ones. The only one he's ever took a fancy to was the one that came with his cage but it rattled so much that I had to remove it. He LOVES his flying saucer though and runs on it pretty much all night. I wouldn't worry too much. They have their own preferences and as long as they're getting some form of exercise, proving they're not arching their back, they should be fine.

That's good to know, thank you! I was worried about them, I'm glad they'll be okay with their saucers.

My sister's Russian Hybrid was never one to use her upright wheel despite everything we tried to convince her to use it. In the end we gave up trying and it wasn't as if she was running with any arching to her back or side for us to be overly worried.

Yeah my old russian hamster really, really liked his flying saucer. Some hamsters just prefer flying saucers, it's perfectly fine.

It definitely won't hurt, especially if they choose to use only their saucers. All my hamsters have refused saucers, plus I've found they just take up space when the hamster doesn't use them. However, there's no problem with using solely a saucer if your hamster has the choice

By the way, I love your new signature Fluffagrams

Franny's saucer fits on his platform and Marcy doesn't like open spaces and he prefers his cage to be as full as possible. So that works out well for me
