I've never seen a hamster behave like this. Lazy baby hamster.
Hi. Here I am back again and it's been a long time! My last hamster mustard sadly left me a few years back and until now I've not had another hamster, my son Dexter wanted one so my home is now complete once again with Gilbert our new member of the family.
I am a little concerned about him though, basically he is so laid back and friendly and was sitting with us on the first day, this was kind of expected as the petshop he came from really care and handle their animals before they sell, but....
You put him in his ball he walks a little then stops....
You hold him he is more interested in nibbling your clothes which I've never seen before?
He is as tame as any hamster I'd had for weeks and we have had him three days...
He wakes up goes on his wheel for a hour or so then sleeps again.
He really isnt that active at all.
Basically he is most lazy and the lady in the shop said he is only around ten weeks. Is this all normal? He is so beautiful and adorable I'm quite concerned about him, he is eating and drinking and weeing and pooping normally.
Advice appreciated.

Re: I've never seen a hamster behave like this. Lazy baby hamster.
It's hard to say whether it's normal or not- it's quite hard to determine if this will behavior will reflect his actual personality to be honest. Three days is not long at all, and I find it can take up to two weeks of settling before your hamster will begin to show signs of what their personalities are truly like. For example, my Syrian Duncan, was super skittish, but after a while turned out to be the sweetest thing ever. My now passed ham spider, was calm and collected the first week, but soon showed that she had zero interest in humans or being contained. Each hamster is different and while some may never like being handled, others crave our attention. It's down to each hamster so I wouldn't necessarily say it's unusual granted he seems healthy. As always, if you're truly concerned, there's no harm in taking a vet visit, but I wouldn't be too stressed over it in all honesty. Three days isn't a very long time to wait before handling, but if he seems okay with it, then you can continue as long as you're observant of his behavior. If he seems stressed or unhappy, then discontinue handling and allow him to settle more. I personally allow all hamsters one week to settle before bothering them at all, and then half a week of just hanging around the cage getting to know them before beginning to tame. If you say he was handled in the shop, it's really no surprise he's so comfortable. I find there's a HUGE difference in the behavior of a hamster when they're held from an early age as opposed to later on in life. Chewing clothing can be quite normal, my first Syrian Remi had a habit of chewing at the sleeves of my shirts! Just try to discourage it as it can get wrapped on teeth and isn't too good for them if ingested.
Good luck with your new little one, he's absolutely adorable! I love his huge little ears

I have no advice, but I just wanted to say how adorable he is! Maybe he's just settling in?

He is very cute! Like the others, I’d say he is probably fine. It is most likely a combination of naturally laid back disposition and being handled from an early age. I say a combination, because if a hamster has a naturally active or skittish personality, even being held from early on won’t turn it into a hamster who loves to sit, though it will help. My friend had a hamster who had been handled daily from 15 days old - she came to her hand tame at 8 weeks old, but was always more nervy than all the hamsters I have owned (all from pet shops and not handled as babies) after I tamed them and they settled. So, I think your boy got gentle genetics and taming early on.

If he's eating, drinking, pooing and weeing normally I would't be very concerned.
Some hams are lazy, others just don't enjoy human contact. Maybe at the beginning he was settling and that's why he was more hyper, he was exploring everything, marking it, and being curious. Maybe he's still setting. Anyway, I've read that syrians usually don't get up in the day. Mine doesn't come out til 2 am. Maybe he is being more active at night too and sleeping the rest of the time.

He sounds fine to me, some males more than females can be a bit lazy & laid back so I wouldn't worry, if he's running on his wheel then he's probably getting enough exercise & some do seem to prefer to be more active when we sleep so you never really know just how active they are.
If you bowl feed gradually switch to scatter feeding & hiding food or treats so he has to forage for them, best way to get them busy & entertained!

He sounds a lot like my beautiful fluffy chocolate syrian boy, Gopal. He wanders slowly around his cage foraging for the food thatbI scatter for him each evening.
He plays on his wheel a bit then has a massive lie in before coming out again at night. He does have a play box which he enjoyd going in but will spend a lot of his time sitting and staring. He has always been like that.
Hopefully your golden boy is simply relaxed and contented.

Congratulations on Gilbert. He's a beauty!
Over the years I've found my male hamsters to be quite lazy but very laid back.
The females have always been more active.
