Post What is he doing?

Hi,
I have a 6 month old syrian hamster called Harvey. He always sleeps in the same place in his wooden house in the corner of his cage.
Yesterday morning i found him in the middle of his cage with a new little burrow out in the open looking sleepy and shivering slightly and in this burrow he has put everything from his foodbowl which is unlike him to do (he usually only takes a few things at a time) and hasnt moved from this spot since and i am a bit worried about this behaviour.
Can anyone help ?

Hi Amyhx and welcome to HC. Have you checked his wooden house to see if there's something wrong with it? Is there any chance you could check him over?
It's not unusual for them to move their sleeping place but him looking shivery isn't.
You may need to have him checked over by a vet.
I hope Harvey's ok.

Apparently they usually change their sleeping place, but suddenly changes in behaviour can mean too that he's in some kind of discomfort. As Lizzy said, check that anything new is bothering him, and keep an eye on him.

Sometimes they decide to sleep someplace new because they were disturbed in their old nest (Mushu has not used his wooden hut since I took him to the vet in it), the temperature changes or because they fancy a change.

Shivering is concerning though. Check that he has enough bedding and the room is warm enough. If he is still shivering, you may want a vet to check him out.

20th May is probably too long to wait for a health issue. Hamsters can go downhill very fast so I suggest bringing the appointment forward if possible.

Good luck and I hope your hamster is ok.

Post Re: What is he doing?

Hi,

The 20th was the earliest one they had and i found the appointment to be terrible tbh i mentioned everything i had seen and all she did was hold him for 5mins and give him back to me she said if its to do with his eyes then there is nothing they can do and his teeth are slightly long which according to her is normal but he was really manhandled which upset me a bit and he was not happy and then she sent us home after 5mins of looking at him. Since the appointment he now decides to chew the bars and is frightened of everything.

Does anyone know a way to stop hamsters chewing bars?
He has the Alexander cage with toys and an 11inch wheel and lots of chew toys but chooses not to use them.

Really sorry to hear you had such a bad experience at the vets, if you are still concerned I would try to find a better vet in your area.
The bar chewing may just be a sign of stress & he could stop once he settles again but there are some good ideas here that may help.

I agree with Cypher about the bar chewing, vet appointments can be quite stressful.
With bar chewing it's important you ignore it, giving him attention will only make him do it more. Each time he bar chews, walk away from him don't look at him, when he stops praise him.
I've had a few bar chewers and I would weave cardboard through the bars, this has always worked for me, he'll soon get bored trying to pull the cardboard out.
I had a hamster who would bar chew at different areas and I weaved cardboard through each bit.
Also, wooden pegs clipped onto the bars will distract him.
