Hamster is piling bedding around his wheel
Hi.
Ever since my Lemon got his Barney cage and large wheel he's always burrowed and slept underneath his wheel. Last week I put some new shredded paper in the cage which he loved and created a new nest with. Unfortunately he's created his new nest where his old food store was and he's moved the food store where he used to sleep.
Which would all be fine, but he's pulling his bedding on and around his wheel. It started out small but he's not piled it to the extent that his wheel won't turn, and he can't use it.
I've always read to not disturb a hamsters food store, and have always been careful even when doing a deep clean to put the food back in the same corner... but I'm totally at a loss of what to do. I suppose the best and we would be to move where the wheel is I the cage? Has anyone had any experience with this or similar?
Sorry if a similar thread exists, I couldn't find it if it does.
Thank you.

Re: Hamster is piling bedding around his wheel
Goodness you sure have a creative little landscaper on your hands!
I would just sweep it away once a night. Hamsters do become upset by us touching their nests, but it's crucial your hamster is able to get exercise nightly. It's actually a very common issue, hamsters piling bedding in and around wheels. Most of the time, people simply sweep it all off and let the hamster do what they will with it. If he gets upset, he'll likely be smart enough to move his nest so I wouldn't worry over it Best wishes

Re: Hamster is piling bedding around his wheel
Dennis-Sama does the same, but his substrate does not stop his wheel. Rather his cardio workout destroys his burrow... its a vicious circle
I would clear around his wheel and maybe give him somewhere else to store his food, perhaps his habitat lacks safe places?
Dennis-Sama now stores food in his bed, for midnight snacking i assume

Re: Hamster is piling bedding around his wheel
Thanks. He was out having some roaming time in my room. I moved the bulk of the bedding out of the way so the wheel was free. I put him back and he went straight to work building his fort back up again! They're funny creatures!

Re: Hamster is piling bedding around his wheel
Larry-Jasper does this as well! They are funny little creatures . You could try moving the wheel up a bar or two, to try and keep the substrate away. I just check the wheel still spins with the bedding on and if it doesn't, sweep it away and pat the bedding down slightly. Jasper has never been upset by this, but if you do have a sensitive hamster, then ignore the patting down part.

Re: Hamster is piling bedding around his wheel
Mine do that too but I find they are perfectly capable of clearing it away if they want to use the wheel!
Can you not raise the wheel up higher though, it looks fairly low down in the cage, I can't see for sure if it's attached to the bars of if it's free standing, if it is free standing just find a small shelf to stand it on to lift it above the substrate a bit more, if it will attach to the bars then it's easy to raise it.

Re: Hamster is piling bedding around his wheel
Inky was doing this, but it has been castle improved by putting a long, narrow bendy bridge (bendy ladder?) around the base of her wheel, to act as a barrier

Re: Hamster is piling bedding around his wheel
Blocking the wheel is a common behaviour among hamsters. I don't know if your wheel is the kind that has a stand or the kind that you only can attach to the bars, if it has a stand, you could make it a base as InkyPen suggest.
I had the same problem and I made a base with cardboard and popsicle sticks and problem solved. You can see it here
Now I've kept it because it helps to soften the sound that the wheel makes against the wood.

Re: Hamster is piling bedding around his wheel
I've been told that they do this to stop the wheel from turning so they can get on top of it and attempt to climb out. Interesting, and I wouldn't doubt it since they are such smart lil buggers!
