Real Livewire!
Unfortunately my other hamster, Saffy, had to be pts three weeks ago and I have since obtained another Syrian from Pets at Home rehoming section. She is totally different in every way from Saffy! Tuppence is fiesty, bold, and very active and shows no fear of me. She has a large cage recommended here, but can't remember the name. She also has a large Wodent wheel and sand tray etc etc. As she is constantly chewing the bars of her cage, I thought she would enjoy coming out for a run, and I get her out using her carry case which she hops into willingly.
However, once out, she always heads for the door and chews the carpet in the corner like crazy! She won't even stop if I go to pick her up or stroke her. She doesn't appear to enjoy her time out at all. Once in her cage, she's back chewing the bars again. I just want her to be happy, but she seems so unsettled. She doesn't used her wheel, but it is working fine. Any advice, as usual would be much appreciated. Regarding poor Saffy, it wasn't overgrown teeth in the end, her heart had given out 😢

Re: Real Livewire!
So sorry to hear about Saffy May she Rest In Peace
When you take Tuppence out, is she being allowed to free roam in a room? Or is she in a playpen? If she's free roaming, part of her issue could be lack of stimulation. I find that an empty (or near empty) room doesn't provide very much stimulation for my hamsters, and thus they hide in corners and get into trouble. What I'd recommend is investing in a secure playpen or even using an empty bathtub. You can fill it with boxes, huts, wheels, and other items to run about in and on. As for the bar chewing, try blocking off the bars she can reach with thick cardboard, and if this doesn't hold her long, plexiglass is a permanent fix. Not all hamsters are crazy for their wheel, but as long as it's working fine and you offer it, I wouldn't worry. Good luck and if you have any other questions, please ask

Re: Real Livewire!
JackieS I too have a monster that must obey her jaws of doom. She is a handful. I constantly have to think of things for her mouth to do besides chewing the bars. I have tried cardboard (she ripped a whole in it within an hour of it being up), cardboard tubes filled with treats, hanging treat sticks (which i have just watched her strip 1 complete side in 10 minutes). Recently I have put up wooden pegs over her favourite places to chew the bars. She chews the pegs instead of the bars, so she isnt hurting her nose. We have gone through 3 pegs in 3 days haha ( i stocked up as they were cheap, so bring it mini mouth). Ive also tried some wooden sticks tied together with sisal string and hung them from the roof of her cage in various places .
I followed a thread on here about making a playpen with plastic storage cubes. I got mine from amazon. Just cable tie them together and you can flatpack when not in use. As Drago said, fill it with toys, boxes and a wheel. Khali is happy in there, loves playing on her big wheel and will let me know when she wants out.
My main tip for a chewer - distract the mouth or put it to better use with things you dont mind being destroyed. Good luck

Re: Real Livewire!
The area you're letting her free run in may be too big. Hammies can feel anxious in open spaces. Try blocking part of the area off and use some toys from her cage. Start this slowly and short periods of time and then gradually widen the area.

Re: Real Livewire!
Thanks for all the brilliant advice I have made a large play box for Tuppence with toilet rolls, boxes etc. I still let her run free, but in the bathroom which is small. She goes in the play box as she pleases and this seems to work well.... She has also started climbing on me
