Default No luck taming

Hello, i've been trying out the bathtub method with a playpen instead as i didn't have a bathtub.
It doesn't seem to be working.. Chica(my syrian, 2months old) always hides in a box i gave her and starts to groom for a long time. even if she does come out, she runs all over the place and even tries to find escape routes.. does she hate me? sometimes she would hide behind me and freeze. thn suddenly she would bolt away. am i on the right track?

Hi,
i think you are on the right track. Read the advice from the wiki here, and follow it. Try hand-to-hand thing (its described there) and picking her up with a roll of toilet paper or a bowl she will jump into, and then you can pick her up.
Usually the young ones dont care that much for cuddling and they just adore running around and exploring the new world outside of the cage.
Just be patient, dont give up on her!

I have the same problem. Boris has been terrified from day one, I've never had a hamster like him. i put my hand with a treat in his play box and he avoids at all costs. I tried gloves and he still knows it's me. I rub my hands oin his sawdust and everything. Have you had any further luck? I've had Boris a week now and I thought he might tame a little, but no. He takes food from fingers, and even tugs if you hold on, but any movement and he is terrified. I can pick him up in a shallow wooden bowl but thatsthe closest he gets.

I had the same problem with my last hamster. I got so frustrated and upset that I just ended up believing it was all me and that she would never like me. So I cared for and looked after in every other way I could, without really handling her. This went on for a good 6 months. Then one day I decided to get her out and see what happened..... she was fantastic and was like a different hamster. She was fine with me and loved being handled. She carried on being great until she past away and went to rainbow bridge!

I think she needed time to settle in, but instead of a couple of days she needed 6 months!!

I have just got Veronica, I've only had her 2 days now, but I a bit nervous she will be like my last hamster was, and like yours are... time will tell though.

Have either of you had any luck? x

Amazing! Boris sat on the back of my hand just now. he was there 3o seconds nibbling a treat before he jumped off (nearly to his death I might add, but alex was there to catch him) We put him back and spoke to him and gave him some seeds and he seemed ok again. I hope this is the beginning of a breakthrough!

Well done. It sounds as if he is gaining confidence and starting to trust you now. I know you will get there in the end both of you. It is a case of the more times a day you can handle the better he will get. With a nervous ham I would do a minimum for 3 sessions a day.
