Litter Training?
I've read that it is possible (and very easy) to litter train hamsters. I was wondering if this really works and if it's worth doing?

Re: Litter Training?
This depends on the litter. If it is clay based,it isn't a safe litter and should never be used(as the majority of pet store litters are in fact clay based or something similar, but indigestible no matter what). However,a hamster safe sand(sterilized play sand of a high quality or high quality chinchilla sand, but nothing else especially not anything from the outdoors)could be safely used or alternatively or even additionally if you wanted high quality paper pellet cat litter could work as well in small amounts as litter only(it would make terrible substrate as it could never be burrowed in,even though you'll see it being used sometimes despite being incredibly inappropriate to the natural burrowing behavior of hamsters).Yesterday's News cat litter for example would be perfect for paper pellet cat litter!
Not all hamsters will use a litter tray of some sort(or sand bath etc),but some do.It is worth trying at the very least, plus it never hurts to have a safe sand bath(these do usually get urinated in anyways).

Re: Litter Training?
I've found it exceptionally easy to litter train Russian hams, some from day one!
They really do like to pee in chinchilla sand though so they will either pee in the sand bath or you can provide another smaller tray close to the nest or where they have already chosen as a pee spot & fill that with sand, they will probably pee in both but if you put the litter tray in the right place mostly in that.

Re: Litter Training?
As others said, it's fairly easy to potty train your hamster with a corner tray and some chinchilla sand. There are plenty of tutorials, but you only need to grab some (or a lot of) peed substrate and put it in the tray over the sand, they catch the drill soon. It's better if you put the tray in the same place where they peeing regularly. There are some that just want to pee wherever they want, but it's worth a try because if you train them it's easier to clean their cage.

Re: Litter Training?
Thanks, I will deffinately give it a try. Any suggestions on where I can get safe sand for my hamster? (I live in Canada) Because I've seen mostly Chinchilla dust and most sources say this is dangerous (because it's dust not sand) so I have avoided buying it

Re: Litter Training?
If you can find Quikrete sand that will work just fine once sifted and sterilized(preferably the natural variety in the clear bag).Unfortunately both Canada and the US are lacking in high quality Chinchilla sand, with the only option that is known to be good being Tiny Friends Farm chinchilla sand if you can find it on Amazon.I know I've seen Kaytee chinchilla sand but I do believe I've heard the quality was poor, plus I only saw it in Petsupermarket but never the more common chain stores.
