Default Staring at wall ? Crazy?

I have a female Syrian hamster who is about one year old who is CONSTANTLY just staring at the wall. She is in a 20 gal long tank and has plenty of space/ toys/ hideouts and she just sits and stares at the wall. I don't know what is wrong or what I should do is this normal? I've had 5 previous hamsters over the past several years and none of them have done this.

I'd say that the behavior is obsessive and indicative of the cage being too small. In accordance with the current US minimum being 450 square inches, and the tank being a mere 360 square inches,I'm not surprised that you'd be seeing any obsessive behavior.I know a 20 long can seem big at first, but they're very small for a Syrian

For a quick and cheap fix,try a bin setup.2 105 qt Sterilite bins($12 each at Walmart),1 64 qt Sterilite bin($7 but Walmart exclusive for the size),zip ties,1/2 inch mesh, wire cutters, and a wood burning knife($13 at Walmart)would be all that you'd need, maybe with an extra bit of wood underneath the smallest bin keeping it in between to allow a smooth direct connection! You can do this gradually starting with one bin and then add on bins one at time to keep it as stress free as possible.

Staring is actually a fairly normal behavior for hamsters. They're not actually staring, simply turning their heads in the direction in which they hear a sound that's causing them to investigate. However, I do agree that 20 gallons is pretty small, especially for a Syrian hamster! Like amity said, there are lots of bins you can get at Walmart, including my favorite, the IRIS bin which is very spacious and fairly cheap. You can get it for $10-$20 or even less if it's on sale. Good luck finding another enclosure Best wishes

Hi, Taylor I think the cage size is a big factor as stated above. I think a 20 gal is too small for a hybrid too. I have a WW hybrid who chews obsessively her bendy bridge. Once she flew herself against the glass. So it's too late to upgrade her now being very old. I didn't know better, but looking back I realize it was to small.

A bin cage as Amity & Drago said I bet would cause her to stop starring at the wall good luck!

Edit: Chloe has neurological problems, so some of her OCD problems might not be related to cage size. I still feel bad keeping her in a 20 gal her whole life. My robos do great in a 20 gal. One robo per cage, I have 3 of them.
