Re: Obsessive
I had same issue with my Syrian girl! I have her in a zoo zone 2 and I went on a huge hamster haul! Bought climbing frames and wooden bridges and tunnels and so many toys and she has stopped trying to get out she so busy now running in and under and over it really did help! Plus I put loads more substrate in and she was so happy!

Re: Obsessive
Not to but in here but a 40 gal breeder tank is a very good size for a Syrian. That's what hamsters do it try to escape, all of them the whole species goal is to escape. No need to go crazy building bigger habitats when what Cypher suggested take off the higher level and put in deeper substrate. Try not to worry.

Re: Obsessive
I got my hamster the green eco habitat in large and its meant to be a rabbit cage, I put in 4 bags of care fresh and lots of toys but she still wants to escape I think its just a natural intuition, but I find it helps when I take her out in the evening and let her run around in her play pen for a bit (even though its the same size as her cage) I do think the biggest cage you can have the better though and you will also find your hamsters personality is shown more and they are less stressed it wasn't the hamster that decided what the cage minimum is.

Measurements depend on the shape, roughly 40 inches x 40 inches in the rectangular shape but you could make it a corner cage instead. That gives two sides at 40 inches x 20 inches each, thus 1,600 square inches(meeting and exceeding the ideal of Germany, which is excellent)without accounting for the tiny amount taken up by the table legs. Those are only a few square inches each though, still keeping it above a square meter no matter what. The 20 inch height is great, while not the best it can still allow for good substrate depth and an appropriately sized wheel.

Yeah I Googled that hack and all I saw was the half sized versions, but I'm sure I could manage to figure out how to do the full one. I'd imagine I would just lay them all down flat on the ground, screw those together and then add in walls, a lid and some acrylic for the front. I don't think it should be too hard!
The only place where I can even imagine putting it, the wall only measures to almost 30" and I have my frog tank there so not sure where I would be able to put that.
I have another place, but it's at the foot of my bed and I would have to get rid of my desk chair/not be able to use my desk.
I'll have to get creative with this!

I've heard of the Zoo Zones! I don't think I can buy them here in the US though ):
Aw, I'm sure your hammy has loads of fun in there!
I do have a lot of that in there but she still seems more occupied with getting out so I'm going to have to re-evaluate something for her!

Yes, I will try to add more bedding in the meantime until I can figure out what is going to work best for her.
That's why I bought the 40g breeder in the first place, because it is above the sq " minimum and I have seen loads of people with it, but I'm not sure if it's the best for my hammy.
I'm going to try and keep her occupied for now!

That looks like a good cage!
I do take her out in the evenings as much as I can, which is usually for about an hour and a half collectively if time permits. Maybe I need to get her a playpen instead of another cage that way she still has two different environments?
Definitely agree that the bigger the better for the cage, I'm just having trouble trying to find room to put a huge cage because I don't have much floor space.

Re: Obsessive
It's above the current US minimum(450 square inches)but that doesn't make it a suitable size.It may work for older and less active hamsters, but for the average Syrian it just isn't big enough. Many Syrians have shown obvious signs that indicate the tank size just isn't right elsewhere,so it isn't really that surprising to me to see yet another Syrian unhappy in a 40 gallon tank

Yeah I had a feeling this might happen when I first got the tank but didn't know of the Lack table hack that you told me about.
I'm not sure what those signs are, but I'm sure my hammy is displaying them with just how I've seen her act.
