Agree definitely don't put the penthouse and tubes back What wheel do you have for him? I know it can be hard fitting a Syrian sized wheel in the HH with both shelves but I think it's possible. At least he has the shelves to hide under but I guess they're a bit exposed from above.

I would persevere - good news he likes burrowing Once he's found some hamstery things he can enjoy he may forget to be so nervous. I think it sounds like taming could be very slow or just not happen if he has a phobia of human hands now - but Souffle might have some advice on that - I think she had a thread on a hamster that couldn't be handled easily and how she tamed them. The main thing is he has a happy home now

I had never attached the penthouse and tubes for any of the hamsters who lived in the HH which is probably how they got lost when I moved house.

There was a large (12-inch) Fly 'n' Saucer wheel in the cage until Pudding broke it. I know a Senior Wodent Wheel fits in because that's what Fudge had. I think I'm going to go for a 12-inch Silent Runner now.

What make/size of sputniks do you have in your cage Serendipity7000?

Cypher, thanks for the coconut shell suggestion. I'll give that a whirl.

I don't think the Silent Runner will fit in the HH. It is 35cm tall on it's stand and might "just" fit inside without scraping the roof but there'd be hardly any substrate in that area then. If it was attached to the bars it would fit heightwise but only just again and I think it would rub against the cage base near the bottom. A 27cm wodent wheel fits really well hung upside down but they're hard to get hold of. A 28cm Trixie wheel would probably be the cheapest option. If he doesn't have a wheel at the moment that might make him a bit frantic too I'm sure he'd love that - the run better in a wheel than a flying saucer usually and it would free up more floor space for toys.

I would get the wheel sorted first maybe and then look at other changes. Loads of substrate and nesting material (torn up strips of toilet paper) and maybe scatter feed to distract him.

Do you have a photo of the cage set up at the moment? It helps to suggest where to put things if you can see where things are now.

Honestly it'd be better to have minimal substrate in a tiny part of the cage rather than take a chance on a wheel that won't fit every single size of hamster possible.Considering the quality and safety difference of the Silent Runner(as well as being an easier to maintain wheel)it is just far superior There haven't been any wheels on the market that have managed to surpass it,which is pretty much impossible at this point at least in terms of being hamster sized(for some other pets, bigger is needed, but still concerning hamsters it is the best).

Not as easy or practical as it may sound Amity, I have a the 9" silent runner in my HH with an area fenced off as the substrate needs to be a fair bit lower even with that size & the cage isn't that big so you really do have to compromise on your set up & substrate in the rest of the cage so a different wheel probably is the best option & as Serendipity says the 12" very likely wouldn't even fit.

It's part of the reason I got a taller cage So I could fit a 12" wheel in as Charlie was so big. I had the Wobust wheel in the Savic cage (same as HH but narrow bar spacing). It swamped it! 1cm clear at the top and 2cm at the bottom. The substrate was like a 1 in 4 hill lol. So I don't think the Silent runner would fit and is a bit big for the HH proportion-wise. The 28cm Trixie is fine for most sizes of Syrians, even larger ones. It stands a bit higher than some as well so enough room for a bit of substrate under it.

Some hammys can be timid. My Syrian, fluffy is pretty shy. He was hard to train and still doesn't like to be held. I've had him for two years. Give that baby some patience and time. You might have to start over and acquaint yourself all over again. Try giving her some tissues that have your scent on them (no perfume/cologne, just put the tissue in your sock for a few hours and then place it in the cage) so she gets used to you

I have completely re-started the taming process. Pudding seems to like the deeper layer or substrate in his cage. The new Trixie wheel arrived last week and he is using it. I've ordered one of the XL sputniks as I think Pudding likes hidey places and I bought a large bag of monkey nuts as Pudding seems partial to them.

I have started to introduce scented tissues into his cage and it looks as though Pudding has taken them into his nest to build up his bed. I hope that's a good sign. Other than that Pudding is still as timid as ever. I sit next to his cage nattering away to him in a calm voice but he's still not in the slightest bit curious. In fact sometimes he hides in a corner and starts grooming himself so I leave him alone as I know that's a sign he is getting stressed out. I shall persevere!

That sounds really positive! He might be quite happy sitting in the corner grooming himself and he will be getting used to your voice. It'll take a bit of time for him to get used to you.

Assume by scented tissues you mean tissues with your scent on? Otherwise scented tissues would be a no-no.

Building up his nest is a good sign. Now he has more substrate and hidey places and nesting material I'm sure he'll start doing a lot more normal hamstery behaviours. They usually have a favourite place to go and groom in the cage - often underneath a shelf - or sitting on a shelf and often in a corner All sounds quite normal. Patience is probably the key here. It could take him a good couple of weeks to be settled in and there can be the odd taming setback so patience. He sounds much happier anyway

It does sound positive, good that he's enjoying the deeper substrate & using his new wheel.
Sitting in the corner & grooming is a sign that he's still nervous but better than trying to run off & hide, I would keep talking to him for a little longer each time when he does that rather than walk off straight away & I'm sure he will gradually become more confident & become a bit more curious.
It can be a bit disheartening when they're slow to make more progress but things are going a lot better now by the sound of it so just more time & lots of patience!
