food in wheel
today I upgraded my female Syrian hamster to the living world green eco habbitat in the size 118.5*78.5*61(L*W*H)large, and its massive. But she has started to do something strange which she hasn't done ever in any of her passed cages. she is storing all her food in her wheel.I'm not sure if this is because she hasn't found a good hiding place to store it yet, or if she feels its a safe place(as its a '12' wrodent wheel) and still smells like her.But she is in my room and its very loud with all the food in there.I have trees taking it out and putting it in a bit of care fresh bedding but that hasn't worked
if anyone has any ideas on how to stop this that would be great
thanks x

Re: food in wheel
Unfortunately, this happens with a lot of hamsters. For a while I just manually took all the pieces out of the wheel, but my hamsters just kept replacing the cache. I'd try encouraging her to use a corner of your choice by taking the food out and moving it there until she gets the point. Best of luck

Re: food in wheel
You could also try removing the food from the wheel and putting it near the nest. Possibly in a hide/house or under a bendy bridge.

Re: food in wheel
I also had to deal with that problem and unfortunately I think that we can do very little about it. They have to grow out of it.
Thankfully mine doesn't do it very often, but when he does, this is how I proceed. I take the food out of the wheel and I put it back in his bowl. I do this two times, if he places the food back on the wheel the third time I remove the wheel. It's not fair for him, and you could say that it's cruel, but I need to sleep, and my family needs to sleep, and he wakes up all the house. I usually wake up to wee in the middle of the night, and then, I put the wheel back. At this point he has placed the food on another place and he doesn't put the food back on the wheel. If you don't wake up naturally you could put an alarm 2 or 3 hours later. Maybe this directions wouldn't work with you, but mine apparently catches the drill because he doesn't do it again for a long time. If she doesn't stop maybe you have to think about placing her cage in another place where that isn't a problem, because we can't remove their wheels indefinitely, or for long periods of time, they need them, and they usually use them at night because it's when they're active.
Other tips that may work. When you empty the wheel you can clean the inside with toilet paper and lukewarm water, that doesn't remove completely their smell but definitely changes something and removes a little bit the smell of food.
I observed that mine does that when his hoards are super full. He usually has 2 hoards, If I keep refilling his bowl over and over again, at some point he must think that there's enough food in the hoards that he already has and looks for another one. I have to be very careful with the amount of food that I put, because If I left him several days without refillings and he notices it, he becomes obsessive with hoarding too... so I suppose that it's a trial and error thing.
What kind of wheel do you have? I thought about getting him an open wheel (his is closed, the trixie wheel) because I thought that maybe that way the food would fall out the wheel, but then I thought about centripetal force (I don't know if it's the right term in English) and maybe that wouldn't solve the problem...
