Re: Little help required for a 1st time hammy parent
Hope she is settling in well. If you're thinking of changing her cage it might be better to wait till she's been in the current one 2 or 3 weeks - then move everything over including all the substrate, without cleaning everything (you could take out the odd handful of stinky stuff) so it smells familiar and helps her settle into the new cage. Keeping things in a similar layout will also help as well - ie house and wheel in similar location/position as now and so on.
Is she a dwarf hamster? Wondered which new cage you are getting. Some of them are quite expensive and not always suitable long term. The Ferplast duna multy is very reasonable and a good basic cage for a dwarf hamster. If it's for a Syrian - have a look on Zooplus - the Alaska, Barney and Alexander are ideal. The Alaska, like the Duna Multy is only just over £30. They may look a bit bare empty but once you have substrate, house, wheel and a few toys they will look better. A good option for a sand bath/box is an empty plastic ice cream tub - it's also quite light so can be pushed down in the substrate a bit to get it the right height. Some of these built in bits and pieces in cages sometimes make the cage harder to lay out or they break. Which cage is it you're thinking of getting on Thursday?

If you have a look at some of the owner photos on the individual cage links it can give ideas for set ups and sand baths -

Totally with Serendipity about transferring everything as it is over to the new, this way she's familiar with her smells.
