escaping. or not
my friends son (35) has a hamster who was in a gerbilarium and chewed the bars all night. they got a small plastic cage, i havent seen it but from the photo it looks too small. they said he prefers it because he doesnt chew bars, i pointed out he cant because there are no bars. i have attached the photo she sent. they are going to get a bigger cage.
its a syrian and keeps escaping and scratching the cage. why does he keep escaping?
my syrian comes out if i put him in his ball. but now in his barney cage he has the ball in there. today i forgot to close one of the doors which is by his old house. i heard him getting the seeds of the stick i put in. i looked and he was on the roof of his house to get the top of the seed stick and right by the open door. i panicked because of the dog. but when i went to shut the door he just looked at me then carried on with eating.
is it normal for a hamster to not want to get out.

Re: escaping. or not
Sounds like you have a content little furry friend to me if he was happy to stay in his cage!
That cage definitely looks far too small for your friend's hamster though. Was the gerbilarium much bigger? Usually bar chewing happens if little hammy's cage is too small, they're stressed or they're bored. It's hard to tell what's in their cage, but if there's plenty for the hamster to play with and space to run around the bar chewing should stop.
Hope that helps I'm sure others on here who are the experts on syrian hams will have much better tips!

Re: escaping. or not
Some hams will take any opportunity to get out if they can while others are more stay at home & don't come out even when the a door is accidentally left open, it totally depends on the ham.
I hope your friends do get a better cage for their ham, going by the size of the cage the wheel must be way to small, it probably keeps trying to escape because the environment it's in is unsuitable, a bigger secure cage should solve the problem.

Re: escaping. or not
I definitely think aberrant behaviors like scratching, chewing, and pacing are all signs that your ham needs a larger enclosure, or more time out of their cage. To me, it sounds like your friends hamster is indicating that, and should be upgraded as soon as it is possible to.
Some hamsters seem not to care much to be out of their cages, my one ham spider was like this, despite letting her out, she'd sleep on the floor or attempt to get back into her tank. It depends on their personality, but I'll say, I would much rather have a ham who was content in their enclosure than one who spends the whole night trying to get out!

Re: escaping. or not
Bar chewing to excess is a sign of boredom and frustration in hamsters, which is usually a function of a cage that is too small. That cage is too small!
Zooplus do some excellent cost-effective large cages - the Alaska / Barney / Alexander models are all good sizes and start from £33 (probably less than he paid for that one in the picture!) Hamster Cages | great selection at zooplus
Chances are the ham also has a wheel that is too small - if it has to arch its back or neck in any way to run on the wheel, it's going to get spinal problems. An 11-12" wheel (e.g. Karlie Wonderland, Trixie) is necessary.
Given the option, Inky will usually want to come out - but she is ridiculously friendly (if I stick my hand in her cage, she'll often climb on rather than me having to pick her up!) and quite keen on exploring in general. She bar chews occasionally, but that's usually because she hasn't had a new toy in her cage for a while - which usually means I need to find her a loo roll tube, or rotate her toys around!

Re: escaping. or not
Don't have any extra advice as everyone else has made some excellent suggestions!
My mum once left Jasper's cage open all night when I was on holiday, but he didn't escape (thankfully). Some hams are just content in their cages.
