Re: Hamster not using wheel
Don't be worried about your hamster not using a flying saucer. They're by no means a replacement for a proper upright wheel, since they just don't allow for a natural running pattern. They cause side arching, and they also just don't give much running surface compared to an upright wheel which has a set running surface which if sized properly is always an appropriate size.
As mentioned Silent Spinner wheels don't really work that well, and are extremely overpriced. There are some much better alternatives, whether you go for a Silent Runner or not.Of course, the Silent Runner does have benefits that not many wheels have such as the solid stand and being an enclosed wheel.Solid stands can be very important, since bad situations can occur due to open stands like those on Silent Spinners and Comfort Wheels.

Re: Hamster not using wheel
My friend has a Syrian and he doesn't like running on his wheel, they've tried a few different ones but he stays well away whereas my Russian Dwarf could run on her wheel all night, she can't get enough! We have a silent spinner too and it broke last night, I picked it up to move it and it just snapped off! They really don't make things well these days!

Re: Hamster not using wheel
Some hamsters just don't like wheels. My hybrid Francisco barely uses his wheel and my old Winter White never used a wheel in his life

So sorry to hear Felix passed away. Do you think he had wet tail when you purchased him? I must admit I am always checking Pumpkins tail area when she climbs the bars just to check all looks ok as you worry about them getting stressed. Hope it hasn't put you off getting another hamster.

Re: Hamster not using wheel
thanks everyone for your replies. got her a 28cm Trixie wheel which she does run in now when she hasn't filled it with food ! It moves a lot easier than the silent runner.
