Sand bath tryout
Hi guys, i'm just testing the new sand bath out with chinchilla sand (starting in a lunchbox until my trixie wood play & burrow tower is delivered) he seems to be intrigued, started burrowing !! although he couldnt burrow much because it's only a test. Anyway he started grooming and then kept shaking - is this because the sand is irritatinh him? Is this normal behaviour? Is it just something he will adjust to? He always rubs his back on the woodshavings, so i bet he'd love sandbath!

Re: Sand bath tryout
I just did this for my dwarf as well
She ruddy loves it
Always in it! She burrows and then rolls around in it very briefly
Haven't notice any shaking from her in it though
Will look out for that

Re: Sand bath tryout
Normally when they roll around, dig and wash in the sand they end up with a bit in their fur. Your hamster shaking was probably just him shaking the sand out of his fur.
It shouldn't be anything to worry about, but if you are ever concerned, I recommend seeing an experienced exotics vet.

Re: Sand bath tryout
My hams tend to give themselves a good shake out after a sand bath, sort of like a dog after going in the water. It sounds like perfectly normal bathing behavior to me.

Sand baths are an amazing thing! Makes your hamsters cage cleaner as well which is always helpful aha!
I wouldn't worry about the shaking, it is most likely your hammie just getting the excess of sand of the fur so that it doesn't get stuck and then irritate him later on.
