I think what souffle said about a predisposition to go into torpor does sound more likely.

Have you noticed any correlation with her being well or in a torpor like state & light levels beckybirmingham?
I'm sure you're right. Thought came to me as I was thinking about possible triggers, as you'd mentioned with the light as being a trigger, like flashing light is to those who suffer epilepsy - etc, but I thought writing it - this is a long shot and probably not the cause.

Torpor does sound like one of the strongest contenders.

Good idea to probably make a list of all possible illnesses to ask the vet, so at least they can say - not x because hamster would also present with y - or yes that's a possibility, it could be that.

Glad you're booked in to see the vet that's knowledgeable about hamsters.
Don't be afraid to ask questions, it helps to write them down, there's definitely something going on with your ham, fingers crossed you get the answers on Saturday.

Hello All,

Ok, so we went on another adventure today to see the hamster specialist today. He was said that any hamsters can go into hibernation as its just nature kicking in. He said she should be between 20-25 degrees at all times. He said that because she was cold once every time she is on the cusp of 20 degrees she will do this behaviour as she is now susceptible towards it.
He said the more it happens the more it will impact her organs and she will begin to lose weight as it takes lots of energy for her to come out of it.
He suggested her eats lots of rice and potatoes and raisons and almonds, high carb and fast sugar so she has instant energy. He said due to their short lifespan it is best to feed them right up and they live lovely little lives! im sure someone will write back about diabetes of which we are aware of but currently warm food and carbs is the way we are going.
Anyway, I am going to sew her a hood for her cage today to keep her even more toasty and we will see where we are in a few days.... x

Some great advice you got Becky from the specialist. Make sure you take a pic of the hood.

I have always fed our hammy right up for the same reason! Yes I think raisins are considered a bit sweet - but if your dwarf hammy doesn't have diabetes at present then 1 raisin a week should be fine I give our Syrian 1 raisin a week. I'm not sure about potatoes to be honest. On some lists it says potatoes aren't good for them but I think a tiny bit now and then is ok. Boiled rice is definitely ok. In fact our hammy cleaned the dish quickly when I put some out the other night. I put two "extras" out each night, as well as his hamster mix and piece of veg. Usually out of: Pecan nut, brazil nut, walnut, cheese, raisin, fresh coconut, a hamster treat, a piece of dandelion root (Zooplus sell bags of them).

Actually a dandelion root might be a good thing for her as well - it's a natural detox type thing and is also wood to chew on. So it should help any flagging organs

Sounds like the main thing is have her cage in a draught-free place and have the room temperature 20 degrees all the time.

I had a campbells that kept having strokes but seemed to recover afterward... and keep going on. although one side of her legs was not quite so synchronized with the other so was quite wobbly when she walked. she would still do normal things except run in the wheel which i took out for safety... one morning i woke up to find her dead by her food bowl with food still wedged in her teeth...I have learnt hamsters can either go unexpectedly with nothing seemingly wrong, or fight on despite all odds.
