Default Urgent! Will a female hybrid affect my male hybrids' behaviour?

I'm adopting another hybrid tomorrow and I've seen a female hamster I really want. Will the smell of a female hybrid make my male pair become territorial and need separating because they can smell her?

They will definitely smell her, I don't know the answer for sure. I brought a male robo in here & my female went into hiding & not acting herself at all until the male was gone.

I had to take him back because of that problem

Are your males hybrids? That will make the difference. I probably wouldn't do it,

Yeah they're hybrids as well. I'm guessing I'll have to keep them in separate rooms then?

I've had male and female Syrians in the same room before and they behaved normally but they're not kept together so they can't become territorial with each other and argue. (Though I once had a male WW and a female Syrian at the same time and when she came into heat she'd squeak whenever she was in the same room as the WW???)

Some hamsters seem to be more disturbed by the scent of another hamster than others, it just depends on the hamster's nature and I suppose some of it could depend on what they're used to.

I used to look after my sister's female Hybrid, I used to have to keep her apart from my Chinese as she used to be quite bothered by one of my girls but yet I can keep my four (two males and two females) in close proximity to each other in the hamster room without too much of a problem. Occasionally there might be a bit of flirting going on through the cage mesh/bars but they quickly get bored and move on to some other activity.

As you've got a pair of males though, there is a chance it might complicate things and make fights more likely but I've not had that kind of set up before to be able to say with any certainty. You'd have to keep an eye on the males in case they do show signs of territorial behaviour or aggression.

It may well affect them and rock the balance meaning they start to fight. Unless you really want to take that risk and can house 3 separately then I would not introduce a female. The males can smell a female from quite a long way - even from another room in the house and via you transferring scent.

Thank you everyone! I decided not to buy the female hybrid as I didn't want to risk either Francisco or Stephano injuring eachother and instead I bought another male. He's orangey with white patches and bright red eyes! So adorable! Pictures will be posted tonight (he's sleeping after having fun exploring his cage)

Oooo he sounds lovely.

I found my syrian males were very excited and vocal when my female syrian was in the same room as them. Not the same I know. It was rather lovely hearing the noises they all made (kind of a chirpy sneezy sound).
