Default Hamster whimpering

I was wondering why my hamster whimpers when he sleeps? He never used to but in the past few weeks he whimpers everyime he is in his nest. It's not overly loud, but loud enough I can hear if I'm in my room and not near his cage. It kind of sounds like a whimpering, knashing teeth, cry. Like the whimper on one of those plastic baby dolls you get for Health class. Sometimes I get worried about the noise and shine a gentle flashlight into his nest to make sure he's okay, and when I do he's usually curled up, but still kind of moving around. Is he having nightmares or is he hurting, or something different entirely?
