Default Re: Help! I think Rosies scared what do i do?

I tried the tissues yesterday with sesame seeds in. At first i thought neither of my girls had touched them but on
Closer inspection there were no seeds in there! So i will definitely use carry on doing this.seeds in the box are new and have only appeared there since she stopped coming out much at night but last cleaning i just took the box out and then put it in. I wondered if i put banana or apple in the box (or small enough flowerpot) would be a good idea. They seem to love both of them and im hoping she can smell the banana and come up for them. Would this be ok to give this way? Could you let me know if cleaning every 3 weeks is ok or should i make it less .thanks.

Put a little bit of both in the box. She'll definitely smell the banana.
Good it's working and they got the seeds.

Good to hear they went for the seeds, I'm sure the banana or apple would work, I wouldn't put wet foods in a flower pot though as they are really absorbent & would need cleaning quite a lot.
How often you clean the cage depends to some extent on the size of the cage & the hams habits, I would think a whole cage clean every three weeks may be a bit much.
Do you know where she pees? If you can find anything that might help as the rest of the cage won't need cleaning so often, you could try a small sand tray close to the nest & see if she pees in there.
I prefer to do maybe a third or half of the cage only at any one time & if I clean the nest area I always put some of the old nest back & the same with the food stash.
Smaller cages generally need cleaning more often but it's still possible to just do partial cleans.

Thats a good point about the flower pots being absorbent. It wouldnt be a good idea to put wet foods in there. Rosies cage is 72cml x 46 w cm x 32.5 ht. Im not sure where she pees now to be honest. She used to do it on the wheel but isnt going on it now and she poos in her sandbath with is easy to change as its a large nescafe lid. Apart from that when i clean her out there is poo in the bottom of the cage. Im not sure where she sleeps as she sleeps underground. What i usually do is remove all objects from her cage then i have to remove a bit of the bedding before she appears out of one of her tunnels. She has been given tissues but doesnt bring them underground at all. She just walks on them! When he appears i used to be able to catch her in a box. Now she bolts to anothe tunnels and dissapears rapidly. Ive tried getting her into the box but shes very fast and avoids it. Will putting the food on train her to go in do you think? Thanks

A large nescafe lid doesn't really sound that big or deep for a sand bath really, they do like to have a good dig around in the sand & some like to roll in & something larger might also encourage her to pee in it.
I have a similar problem with finding pee areas with Zen, it's such a small amount & the substrate is so absorbent it is hard to know where she's been other than the wheel & sometimes her sand bath, it basically comes down to checking her nest area regularly to see how clean it is or isn't & if Rosie is doing the same (not always peeing in one place but probably in the nest at least some of the time) you just have to keep checking, not too often though, weekly should be enough, just a quick look & only clean up what needs to be removed leaving everything else as undisturbed as possible.
If you can get her to come out for treats in the tube then you should be able to take her out for a quick check & minor cleans without the upheaval of whole cage cleans.
Her cage isn't that small so I think you could easily just do half at any one time.
It may take time & patience but do keep trying to coax her out before doing anything in the cage, if you remove everything & then try to get to her she'll know & already be scared.
Poo in the bottom of the cage isn't anything to worry about btw, you don't have to remove all of that at each cage clean, pee is what you really need to try to clean away.
Persevere with the food & treats in the box & hopefully she'll get brave enough again not to run off when you need to get her out.

Thanks cypher. The reason I use a nescafe lid is there isnt that much room left in the cage once you have the 2 boxes, house, waterbottle and wheel in but i will see if i can get something bigger in. She can roll in the nescafe lid and seems to love it but im not sure about digging so will look for something slightly bigger. I will start doing a half cage clean next time. (This will go for Daisy as well). When you say check the nest do you mean i have to dig down and find it (im not sure where her nest is exactly as i have never found her sleeping in it) i do think i have to work her going into the box on her own accord so ill keep putting treats in and hope that works. Has anyone taught their robo to do this?. Any tips would be appreciated! If i do the half clean monthly will this be ok or too often/not enough? Thanks

If you can only fit the bare necessities into a cage, chances are you need a bigger cage.As for nests,it can be very hard to figure out exactly where one part starts and figure out where each area is.Houses which can be lifted up are very good for this,or at least something with a lid to lift up.Finding a nest doesn't mean you're going to find a hoard though, which can be a whole extra issue when it comes to keeping cages clean and free from rotting food and general strong odors!

Amity the size of the cage totally depends on the individual ham, if a ham needs a small space it can be hard to fit in the bare necessities but that does not mean you have to upgrade the cage, to do that with a scared or reclusive robo would probably mean a major backward step.
Most hams also only hoard dry food so the stash can be left for quite a while with no problem & I've never had a smelly hoard! If they do stash fresh food then the way or time fresh is given needs changing.

Mollysfriends I would focus on getting her used to the box again for now, if you aren't sure where she sleeps then don't worry too much as a robo pees so little it doesn't need to be cleaned that frequently, half the cage once a month should be fine, if you can figure out where she sleeps & pees while you do those cleans then you'll know where you may sometimes need to clean more often.
It can be hard to tell where the pee is, even with white fitch I often find sniffing it is the only way to know

Thankyou. I'll keep working on the box so she becomes more confident and it doesnt hinder her when she has a clean again. Shes definitely eating the treats and banana when im not awake so maybe her length of time out will gradually get longer. I will be happier when i see her back on her wheel. I havent seen her when I wake up at night and its a month now but I'm hoping it will improve with time
I didnt realise her cage was small which i feel awful about i thought it was a reasonable size as i checked before getting it on the cage reviews and it was in the green for size which i thought meant it was ok. I will look at getting a bigger one when shes more confident.

Don't feel bad about your cage size, I really don't think it's too small & I'm a huge fan of big cages where possible! I think it's the appropriate size for Rosie right now, if she becomes more confident over time then you may want to consider a change but I wouldn't think now is the time to do that.
