2.5 cm does seem extremely tiny, just under an inch!A breeder would know even more on that though.

The average size for an adult roborovski is about 4-5cm however there can be some variance in this with some hamsters being longer and others shorter than this.

How old are they? If they're still fairly young then they might still have a bit of growing to do.

i think i must have slightly under estimated their size
Got a measuring tape and they're definatly not that small. About 4.5 cm would be more accurate!

I think it probably is just time to build confidence They are prey creatures and it's an instinct to not feel safe from above, especially when they're young. When they dig tunnels they have something over their heads for protection. Likewise a shelf to sit under or a tunnel to run through offers protection. So maybe look at having lots of toys on the floor of the cage (if you haven't already) that offer that head protection. Larger tunnels can work well - like the size of cork logs - and also provide texture to run over as well as something to sit in and hide under. So lots of hidey places, cardboard boxes, tubes etc. And a house that's big enough to build a good sized nest in.

It sounds similar to something I've witnessed in my Chinese and Serendipity is right, a lot of it has to do with a vulnerability they feel in open spaces due to the fact that they are prey animals.

I've found that my Chinese have done better with a reduced space with toys that they can hide in and run through. My youngest has preferred a more smaller space to make his nest despite there being a nice wooden nest box available that is more spacious so that feeling of being enclosed is obviously what he feels happiest with.

If one of them is in a glass/perspex cage you could try covering part of it with fabric or cardboard so that it is more enclosed and cages with deep coloured bases or coloured bin cages have been known to help too.

I've not found the tissue trick was that effective with the last pet shop hamster I had and she wasn't going to be tamed until she was ready. I think the fact that that they're still quite nervous in their cages is a bit of a barrier for you at the moment. There's no harm in keeping up with it so that they are more familar with your scent when they feel ready to spend more time with you.

I have had my two robos for over a year now (oh the cuteness).

Fairy lives in the alaska cage from zooplus (84 x 48.5 and 44cm high) and the Flower in the grosvenor large rat and hamster cage (77 x 47 x 36cm high). Flower was upgraded to cage that was 100 x 50cm but she wasnt happy (hardly saw her) so she is back in the grosvenor now.

Both of them are look dont touch hamsters but will come out a forage when I am there. I talk softly to them and did do the tissue trick when I first had them.

Best of luck with your two.

What I've figured out just searching and pondering is that hamsters and mice are extremely similar when it comes to setting up cages,as in they really don't like big open spaces and prefer to have as much cover as possible.Think something that almost looks a bit crowded, but still gives small open space between everything for a hamster to walk through!

True Amity. My hamsters all have loads of hiding places which they make full use of.

Thats a good point about them being prey animals. They both have boxes in their cages. Rosie has a large house which she likes to dive under and behind as well as 2 boxes (one is a food store) a sand and a wheel. Half her cage is coloured as it was classed as a guineapig cage (which would be ridiculously small for 2 guineas !)I have put boxes on Daisys levels as well so shes not so open up there. Under the levels its well covered (usually fairly dark because of the platforms) and each side has a box in under the levels. Makes it hard for me to see her but i guess good for her to hide in. Rosie is now usually out when I go to bed. She will also now sit back on my hand for food. Which is great but again disappears once shes collected the food and she doesnt come back up again. Daisy is up all night on her wheel or doing something on her levels (the whimzee seems popular !) Do you think its a good to get Rosie another wheel just incase thats part of the problem ? Sorry its taking so long to reply my son keeps borrowing the phone for pokemon go and the battery then dies!

If she was happy with the wheel before & it works ok it's probably not the problem but it might still be worth trying her with a new one.
